AUSTIN, Texas — Chris Johnson has signed an Athletic Scholarship Agreement (ASA) to play basketball next season at The University of Texas, head coach Rodney Terry announced Monday. Johnson will join the Longhorns for the upcoming 2023-24 season.
Johnson (6-5, 180), a guard from Missouri City, Texas, played his senior year at Montverde Academy (Fla.) under coach Kevin Boyle. He was ranked No. 44 nationally by ESPN in the final Class of 2023 rankings. Johnson averaged a team-best 3.6 assists per contest while helping Montverde post a 23-3 overall record and advance to the quarterfinals at the GEICO High School Basketball Nationals during the 2022-23 season. Montverde was the nation's top-ranked team in the SCNext Top 25 entering the national tournament.
Johnson played at Fort Bend Elkins High School during his freshman thru junior seasons. As a junior in 2021-22, he averaged 19.5 points, 5.0 assists and 4.7 rebounds per game while leading Elkins to a 30-6 overall record. During his sophomore season in 2020-21, Johnson averaged 15.7 points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.7 assists per contest and was named Offensive MVP of District 20-6A. He also earned District 20-6A Newcomer of the Year accolades as a freshman in 2019-20.
