Hernandez places seventh on 1-meter at World Aquatics Championships

Hailey Hernandez was the top finisher for the United States in the event.
FUKUOKA, Japan – Texas Diving's Hailey Hernandez placed seventh in the 1-meter springboard final on Saturday at the World Aquatics Championships at the Fukuoka Prefectural Pool.
Diving for the United States, Hernandez scored 259.20 points to place seventh in the world championship meet. China's Lin Shan was the victor with 318.60 points, while Shan's teammate Li Yajie (306.35) finished as the runner-up and Mexico's Aranza Vázquez (285.05) placed third.
In 10th after the second round, Hernandez scored 50.60 points with a back 1 ½ pike to move into seventh place. The Southlake, Texas followed that with 50.40 points on a reverse 1 ½ pike and then scored 54.60 points in the fifth and final round on a front 1 ½ with two twists. She improved upon her prelims scores on all five of her dives, scoring at least 50.40 points in each round.
Hernandez will next compete on the 3-meter springboard with the preliminary rounds taking place on Wednesday, July 19. Incoming Longhorn Caroline Kupka of Norway will also dive in the 3-meter competition.
Texas Ex Paola Pineda is set to dive for Mexico in the synchronized 3-meter with partner Arantxa Chávez on Sunday, July 16 with the prelims beginning at 7 p.m. CT.
