Jacoby wins bronze in 100m breaststroke at World Aquatics Championships

Lydia Jacoby placed third in the women’s 100m breast World Championship final; Luke Hobson finishes fifth in the men’s 200-meter freestyle.
FUKUOKA, Japan – Texas Swimming and Diving's Lydia Jacoby captured bronze for the United States in the women's 100-meter breaststroke at the World Aquatics Championships on Tuesday at the Marine Messe Fukuoka, while Luke Hobson placed fifth for the U.S. in the men's 200-meter freestyle.
Jacoby took third on the 100m breast championship final and was the top American finisher with a time of 1:05.94, finishing a tenth of a second from the silver. Ruta Meilutyte of Lithuania claimed the title, touching the wall in 1:04.62, the eighth-fastest performance all-time. At the turn, Jacoby touched the wall third, but at 75 meters the race for silver and bronze looked to be between Lilly King of the United States and Ireland's Mona McSharry who had taken control of the second and third positions. However, just ahead of the wall Tatjana Schoenmaker of South Africa (1:05.84) and Jacoby surged into the podium positions.
Hobson took fifth in the 200m free with a time of 1:45.09. Great Britain came away with the gold and silver, with Matt Richards (1:44.30) and Tom Dean (1:44.32) taking first and second, while South Korea's Hwang Sunwoo (1:44.42) placed third.
In other action, Carson Foster, swimming for the United States, advanced to the men's 200-meter butterfly final, posting the top preliminary time of 1:53.85 in the semifinals. He will race out of lane four in the final on Wednesday, July 26 at 6:53 a.m.
Caspar Corbeau reached the men's 50-meter breaststroke semifinals for the Netherlands, finishing just outside of the final after a swim of 27.21 to place 10th in the field.
On the high dive, Matt Cooper advanced to the 27-meter semifinals for the United States after scoring 183.75 points to place seventh through the first two rounds of competition. The semifinal round will take place on Wednesday, July 26 at 10 p.m. CT.
Swimming at the World Aquatics Championships resume on Tuesday evening at 8:30 p.m. CT. The session will feature preliminary heats for women's 50-meter backstroke and 200-meter butterfly, the men's 100-meter freestyle and 200-meter IM, and the mixed 4x100m medley relay.
Texas will be represented Foster in the men's 200m IM, racing in the sixth heat at 9:36 p.m. CT. Additionally, Shaine Casas, who trains with Texas Men's head coach Eddie Reese, will be racing for the U.S. in heat five of the 200m IM. The preliminary rounds and finals are broadcast live on Peacock.
