Abmas posts a game-high 22 points, and Disu adds a double-double to pace the Longhorns on Tuesday night in Norman.
NORMAN, Okla. — Graduate guard Max Abmas registered a game-high 22 points, and graduate forward Dylan Disu added a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds to lead Texas (14-5, 3-3 Big 12) to an impressive 75-60 road victory over No. 11/13 Oklahoma (15-4, 3-3 Big 12) on Tuesday night at the Lloyd Noble Center. The Longhorns, who claimed their second-straight win over a ranked opponent after defeating No. 9/9 Baylor in Austin on Saturday, earned their sixth-straight victory over the Sooners and won for the fifth-consecutive time in Norman.
Abmas converted 8-of-14 field goals, including 4-of-8 from three-point range, and added four rebounds and three assists in 36 minutes. Abmas passed the legendary Elvin Hayes of Houston (2,884) to move into the No. 15 spot on the all-time NCAA Division I career scoring list with 2,902 points.
Disu recorded his first double-double of the season and hit 6-of-10 field goals, including 2-of-3 from three-point range, and 5-of-6 free throws, to go along with a season-best 10 boards and four assists in 35 minutes. Sophomore guard Chendall Weaver provided a spark with a season-high 11 points (4-8 FG, 3-4 FT) and four rebounds (three offensive) in a season-best 27 minutes. Sophomore forward Dillon Mitchell tied his career high with 13 rebounds.
The Longhorns jumped out to a 7-0 advantage following a Disu jumper at the 17:00 mark. Texas increased its cushion to 18-9 after a Weaver layup with 9:27 remaining, but the Sooners went on a 17-2 run over the next five minutes to grab a 26-20 advantage following an Otega Oweh layup at the 4:31 mark.
Oklahoma took a 28-22 lead after a pair of Rivaldo Soares free throws with 3:56 left, before back-to-back threes from Disu and Brock Cunningham evened the contest at 28-28 at the 2:57 mark. The Sooners grabbed a 33-30 advantage following a pair of Oweh free throws with 1:06 left, before a Mitchell dunk with 48 seconds left trimmed the deficit to 33-32 at the break.
The Sooners pushed their cushion to 38-34 after a Oweh three-pointer at the 19:09 mark, before Texas responded with a 13-1 run over the next three minutes to grab a 47-39 advantage following an Ithiel Horton three-pointer with 16:23 remaining. Oklahoma answered with a 13-5 spurt over the next four-plus minutes to even the contest at 52-52 after a Jalon Moore layup at the 12:05 mark.
Texas took the lead for good on the ensuing possession with an Abmas three-pointer to grab a 55-52 advantage with 11:16 left. The Sooners trimmed the deficit to 55-54 after a pair of free throws from Soares at the 11:01 mark, before the Longhorns went on a 10-0 run over the next three minutes to increase their cushion to 65-54 following a Disu three-pointer with 8:09 left. Oklahoma cut the gap to 67-58 after a Moore layup at the 5:19 mark, but that would be the last time the margin would be in single digits.
Texas returns to the court when it travels to face No. 21/19 BYU on Saturday, Jan. 27. Tip is scheduled for 1 p.m. Central (12 p.m. Mountain) at the Marriott Center in Provo, and the game will be televised nationally by ESPN2.
