Johnson named SEC Men’s Basketball Freshman of the Week

Freshman guard averaged 28.5 points per game in pair of contests last week.
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — University of Texas freshman guard Tre Johnson has been named the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week, the league office announced Monday. This marks Johnson's first career weekly league honor.
During UT's two contests last week, Johnson averaged a team-best 28.5 points per game while converting 55.3-percent (21-38) from the floor, including a 55.6-percent mark (10-18) from three-point range, and 71.4-percent (5-7) from the free throw line. He also added 3.5 rebounds and 1.5 steals per game along with seven assists (3.5 apg) against just two turnovers in 34.5 minutes per contest.
Johnson set the UT record for most points (29) in a freshman debut during last Monday's 80-72 loss to Ohio State as part of the Hall of Fame Series Las Vegas Opening Night event (Nov. 4). He hit 10-of-20 field goals, including 5-of-10 from three-point range, and 4-of-5 free throws while adding five boards, four assists against one turnover, two steals and one blocked shot in 39 minutes.
Johnson returned to the court and posted 28 points (11-18 FG, 5-8 threes, 1-2 FT) and added three assists against one turnover in 30 minutes during the 90-59 home-opening victory over Houston Christian on Friday (Nov. 8).
No. 19/19 Texas (1-1) returns to action when it hosts Chicago State on Tuesday, Nov. 12. Tip is scheduled for 7 p.m. Central at Moody Center, and the contest will be streamed nationally by SEC Network+.
