Alison Gibson and partner Krysta Palmer secured a quota spot for Team USA for the Paris Olympics.
DOHA, Qatar – Texas Ex Alison Gibson finished fourth in 3-meter synchronized springboard competition at the World Aquatics Championships on Wednesday at the Hamad Aquatic Centre. Competing with partner Krysta Palmer, the duo secured a quota spot for Team USA to compete in that event at the Olympic Games in Paris this summer.
In their first international competition together since the Tokyo Olympic Games, Gibson and Palmer tallied 279.30 points to earn the fourth-place result, just 2.4 points from a podium finish and 44.13 points behind champions Chang Yani and Chen Yiwen of China, who scored 323.43 points for the gold.
Gibson and Palmer scored 60 points or more on each of their three optional dives, highlighted by 68.82 points on their front 3 ½ pike. They were the only team in the competition to perform a front 2 ½ with two twists, scoring 60.18 points on the difficult dive.
Former Longhorn Paola Pineda, competing for Mexico with partner Arantxa Chávez, placed seventh in the 3-meter synchro final with 269.55, four points shy of the top-six and an automatic Olympic qualifier.
Gibson joins junior Hailey Hernandez in having clinched Paris Olympics qualifiers for USA Diving, with Hernandez's sixth-place result on 3-meter springboard at last summer's world championships securing the event for the United States. USA Diving will make Olympic team selections in June.
Next up for Texas, seniors Bridget O'Neil and Noah Duperre will dive for Team USA in the mixed 3-meter synchronized springboard final on Saturday, Feb. 10.
