AUSTIN, Texas — University of Texas graduate guard Max Abmas has been named the College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-America Division I Men's Basketball Team Member of the Year, the organization announced Wednesday. In conjunction with the accolade, Abmas also was one of five players named to the CSC Academic All-America first team and was joined by Brandon Angel (Stanford), Marcus Domask (Illinois), Tyson Degenhart (Boise State) and Cam Spencer (UConn).
Abmas is the first player in program history to receive the Academic All-American of the Year honor and just the third student-athlete at The University of Texas to be recognized as the Academic All-American of the Year in their respective sport, joining Justin Dumais (2001-02, Men's At-Large, Diving) and Donovan Kilmartin (2007-08, Men's Track & Field/Cross Country). Abmas also is just the fifth Men's Basketball player in school history to earn Academic All-America recognition. He joins Gary Overbeck (CoSIDA second team in 1968), Jack Louis (CoSIDA second team in 1973), Jim Krivacs (CoSIDA first team in 1979) and D.J. Augustin (ESPN The Magazine first team in 2008) in accomplishing the feat.
Abmas played and started all 34 games this season for the Longhorns and led the team in scoring (16.8 ppg), assists (140, 4.12 apg) and minutes (35.1 mpg). He earned spots on the All-Big 12 First Team (media), All-Big 12 Second Team (coaches) and the five-person Big 12 All-Newcomer Team (coaches). A three-time Big 12 Newcomer of the Week selection (Dec. 18, Jan. 15 and Feb. 5), Abmas converted 42.5-percent (194-456) from the floor, including a 36.2-percent (92-254) mark from three-point range, and 90.0-percent (90-100) from the free throw line this season.
Abmas tied the UT single-season record for most three-pointers made (50) in Big 12 Conference play, sharing the mark with both Kevin Durant (2006-07) and Daniel Gibson (2005-06). Abmas also ranked third on the UT single-season list for highest free throw percentage (90.0).
Abmas concluded his collegiate career by playing and starting in 157 games. He posted five-year collegiate totals of 3,132 points, 536 assists, 514 rebounds and 171 steals. Abmas reached double figures in scoring 143 times, topped the 20-point mark 77 times, eclipsed the 30-point plateau 20 times and topped the 40-point mark twice in his career.
Abmas became just the third player in NCAA Division I men's history to record both 3,000 points and 500 assists, joining Antoine Davis (Detroit Mercy) and Keydren Clark (Saint Peter's). Abmas finished at No. 8 on the NCAA Division I men's career scoring list (3,132 points) and No. 3 on the NCAA Division I men's career three-point field goals made chart (512).
Abmas earned his BS in Mathematics from Oral Roberts in Spring 2023 and is pursuing a graduate certificate in Strategic Communication at The University of Texas. The Longhorns concluded the 2023-24 season with a 21-13 overall record (9-9 Big 12) and advance to the NCAA Tournament Round of 32. Texas is one of just eight programs in Division I men's basketball to advance to at least the NCAA Tournament Round of 32 in each of the last three seasons, joining Baylor, Creighton, Gonzaga, Houston, Kansas, Michigan State and Tennessee.
