Former Longhorn becomes a two-time Olympian following Monday’s announcement.
AUSTIN, Texas – After leading the Canadian Women's National Team (CANWNT) to an Olympic Gold Medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, former University of Texas women's soccer student-athlete Julia Grosso has been selected to represent her home country, Canada, at the 2024 Paris Olympics, Canada Soccer announced on Monday morning.
Grosso, a Vancouver, British Columbia native, is one of four midfielders on the 22-member (18 players, four alternates) team. The 2024 Olympic Games will mark the first time CANWNT will take the pitch at a Summer Olympics without long-time team captain and the world's all-time leader for international goals scored for men or women Christine Sinclair, who participated in each of the last four Summer Olympics.
Grosso, a two-time United Soccer Coaches All-American during her time on the Forty Acres from 2018 to 2021, helped Canada to its first-ever Olympic Gold Medal after outlasting Sweden, 3-2, in penalty kicks after the match ended, 1-1, following extra time.
Canada will be the first Olympic women's soccer team to take the pitch at the 2024 Paris Olympics when CANWNT opens Group A action against New Zealand at 10 a.m. CT on Friday, July 25. France and Columbia round out the four-team group.
The United States, Zambia, Germany and Australia represent Group B, while Spain, Japan, Nigeria and Brazil make up Group C. The top two teams in each group, along with the two best third-place teams, advance to the knockout stage that begins on Saturday, August 3.
