Freshman guard averaged 21.0 points per game in pair of home wins against ranked opponents last week.
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — University of Texas freshman guard Tre Johnson has been named the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week, the league office announced Monday. This marks Johnson's second career weekly league honor, as he previously earned the accolade on Nov. 11.
During UT's two contests last week, Johnson averaged a team-best 21.0 points, 3.0 assists and 2.5 rebounds in 36.1 minutes per game while leading the Longhorns to a pair of home wins against ranked opponents. He converted 15-of-16 (.938) from the free throw line in the two contests.
In Tuesday's 61-53 victory over No. 22/24 Missouri (Jan. 21), Johnson tallied 12 points (5-6 FT), four rebounds and two assists in 35 minutes. During Saturday's come-from-behind 70-69 win against No. 13/13 Texas A&M (Jan. 25), he recorded a career-high 30 points (8-18 FG, 4-10 threes, career-best 10-10 FT), four assists against one turnover and two blocked shots in 37 minutes.
While playing all 20 minutes in the second half of Saturday's victory over the Aggies, Johnson helped the Longhorns rally from a 22-point deficit with 17:07 remaining in the game (tying the program record for largest comeback victory since at least the start of the 1998-99 season) by recording 24 points (5-10 FG, 4-6 threes, 10-10 FT) in the second half.
On the season, Johnson leads the SEC in scoring (18.8 ppg) and has posted six 20-point efforts and reached double figures in scoring in 17 of his 18 contests. Texas (14-6, 3-4 SEC) returns to action when it travels to face No. 23/23 Ole Miss (15-5, 4-3 SEC) on Wednesday, Jan. 29. Tip is scheduled for 8 p.m. Central at the Sandy and John Black Pavilion, and the contest will be televised nationally by ESPN2.
