Tre Johnson is one of 25 players on watch list for award that honors the National Player of the Year.
LOS ANGELES — University of Texas Men's Basketball freshman guard Tre Johnson has been named to the Midseason Top 25 Watch List for the John R. Wooden Award presented by Principal, the Los Angeles Athletic Club announced Tuesday. Selected by a preseason poll of national college basketball experts, the list comprises 25 student-athletes who are frontrunners for the most prestigious honors in college basketball: the Wooden Award All-American Team and the Wooden Award Most Outstanding Player.
The players on the list are considered strong candidates for the 2025 John R. Wooden Award Men's Player of the Year. Players not selected for the midseason list remain eligible for inclusion on the Wooden Award late-season list and the National Ballot. The National Ballot will feature 15 top players who have demonstrated to their universities that they meet or exceed the Wooden Award qualifications.
Johnson leads the team and ranks second in the SEC in scoring (19.0 ppg) while converting 46.6-percent (81-174) from the field, including a 41.6-percent mark (33-79) from three-point range, and 33-of-38 (.868) free throws through the first 12 games this season. He has reached double figures in 11 of his 12 games played and topped the 20-point mark four times. His 19.0 ppg is the highest scoring average by a Texas player since J'Covan Brown averaged 20.1 ppg during the 2011-12 season.
Johnson previously earned SEC Freshman of the Week (Nov. 11) for his efforts in the two contests against Ohio State (Nov. 4) and Houston Christian (Nov. 8). He set the UT program record for most points (29) in a freshman debut during the contest against Ohio State, topping the previous mark of 20 by Kevin Durant against Alcorn State on Nov. 9, 2006. Johnson registered 29 points (10-20 FG, 5-10 threes, 4-5 FT), five rebounds, four assists against one turnover, two steals and one block in 38:43 of game action against the Buckeyes.
The winners and the All-Americans of the 2025 John R. Wooden Award presented by Principal will be honored at the Los Angeles Athletic Club on Friday, April 11, 2025.
Johnson and Texas return to the court when the Longhorns host No. 2/2 Auburn later tonight. Tipoff for the contest is set for 8 p.m. Central in Moody Center, and the contest will be televised nationally by ESPN2.
