Swain records his first double-double as a Longhorn during Wednesday’s defeat in the ACC/SEC Challenge.
AUSTIN, Texas — Junior guard/forward Dailyn Swain recorded a double-double with a team-high 15 points and 10 rebounds, but Texas (6-3) dropped an 88-69 decision to Virginia (7-1) as part of the ACC/SEC Challenge on Wednesday evening in Moody Center. This marked the first home loss of the season for the Longhorns.
Swain converted 6-of-13 field goals and 2-of-2 free throws while tying his career high in rebounds and adding four assists and a season-best four steals in 32 minutes. Senior guard Jordan Pope joined Swain in double-figure scoring with 10 points (3-8 FG, 4-4 FT) in 27 minutes.
Texas scored the game's opening four points and took a 9-8 lead following a pair of Swain free throws at the 15:40 mark. The Cavaliers answered with a 12-0 run over the next three minutes to grab a 20-9 cushion after a Jacari White three-pointer with 12:52 remaining. The Longhorns trimmed the margin to 27-17 following a Pope jumper at the 8:25 mark, but Virginia responded with a 7-0 spurt over the next two-and-a-half minutes to build a 34-17 advantage after a pair of Thijs De Ridder free throws with 5:28 left.
Texas used a 6-0 run to cut the gap to 34-23 following a Swain layup at the 3:07 mark, but the Cavaliers closed the half on a 12-4 spurt to take a 46-27 lead into the break. Virginia converted 50-percent (9-18) from three-point range in the opening 20 minutes.
On the opening possession of the second half, a pair of Camden Heide free throws trimmed the margin to 46-29 at the 19:42 mark but that was as close as the Longhorns would get for the remainder of the contest. Virginia continued to execute at a high level on the offensive end in the second half, as it hit 57.1-percent (12-21) from the field including a 3-of-6 mark from beyond the arc in the final 20 minutes.
Texas is back in action when it hosts Southern on Monday, Dec. 8. Tip time is scheduled for 7 p.m. Central in Moody Center, and the game will be televised nationally by SEC Network.
