Freshman guard is one of 30 players on midseason list for award that honors the National Player of the Year.
ATLANTA — University of Texas Men's Basketball freshman guard Tre Johnson is one of 30 players named to the Jersey Mike's Naismith Trophy Men's Player of the Year Midseason Team, the Atlanta Tipoff Club and Naismith Awards announced Friday. The Naismith Trophy is annually awarded to the nation's top men's and women's college basketball players.
Johnson leads the SEC in scoring (19.3 ppg) while converting 43.9-percent (154-351) from the field, including a 38.6-percent mark (59-153) from three-point range, and 87.4-percent (76-87) from the free throw line this season. He also leads the team in minutes (33.2 mpg) and ranks second in assists (59, 2.6 apg) and tied for third in steals (21). Johnson has reached double figures in scoring in 22 of his 23 games played, topped the 20-point mark nine times and eclipsed the 30-point mark once.
Johnson is looking to become just the sixth freshman in league history (dating back to the 1932-33 season) to lead the Southeastern Conference in scoring. Auburn's Johni Broom currently ranks second in the SEC in scoring (18.1 ppg) entering Saturday's games. A three-time SEC Freshman of the Week honoree, Johnson's 19.3 ppg is the highest scoring average by a Texas player since J'Covan Brown averaged 20.1 ppg during the 2011-12 season.
Johnson and Texas return to the court when the Longhorns host No. 15/18 Kentucky on Saturday, Feb. 15. Tipoff for the contest is set for 7 p.m. Central in Moody Center, and the contest will be televised nationally by ESPN.
