Johnson posts a game-high 29 points to pace the Longhorns on Saturday.
COLUMBIA, S.C.. — Freshman guard Tre Johnson registered a game-high 29 points, but Texas (16-11, 5-9 SEC) dropped an 84-69 decision at South Carolina (11-16, 1-13 SEC) on Saturday night in Colonial Life Arena. This marked just the third all-time meeting between the two schools and first since the 1981-82 season.
Johnson tied his career high in field goals made (11-21), while hitting 3-of-7 from three-point range, and converted 4-of-4 free throws to go along with three rebounds in 38 minutes. Graduate forward Kadin Shedrick set a season high with five blocked shots (one shy of his career high set during his time at Virginia) and added nine rebounds (four offensive) and eight points in 30 minutes.
After a Shedrick free throw gave the Longhorns an early 5-4 advantage at the 15:54 mark, the Gamecocks scored eight-straight points over the next three-and-a-half minutes to grab a 12-5 cushion following a Nick Pringle jump hook with 12:10 remaining. A Johnson layup brought Texas to within 20-12 at the 7:19 mark, before South Carolina used back-to-back baskets to increase the margin to 24-12 after a Collin Murray-Boyles dunk with 5:49 left. A Jayson Kent layup cut the deficit to 32-22 at the 1:47 mark, but the Gamecocks closed the half on an 8-0 run to take a 40-22 lead into the break.
South Carolina extended its cushion to as much as 22 points (70-48) after a pair of Jamarii free throws with 7:01 left. The Longhorns went on a 13-2 spurt over the next three-and-a-half minutes to trim the margin to 72-61 following a Kadin Shedrick tip-in at the 3:20 mark. That was as close as Texas could get for the remainder of the contest.
Texas returns to action when it travels to face Arkansas on Wednesday, Feb. 26. Tip is set for 8 p.m. CT at Bud Walton Arena, and the game will be televised nationally by ESPN2.
