Johnson named SEC Men’s Basketball Freshman of the Week

Freshman guard earns the accolade for the second-straight week and third time this season.
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — University of Texas freshman guard Tre Johnson has been named the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week, the league office announced Monday. This marks Johnson's second-straight and third career weekly league honor, as he previously earned the accolade on Nov. 11 and Jan. 27.
During UT's two contests last week, Johnson averaged 20.0 points, 4.0 assists, 3.0 rebounds and 1.5 steals per game in road games against No. 23/23 Ole Miss and LSU. He converted a perfect 10-of-10 from the free throw line in the two contests.
In Wednesday's 72-69 loss at No. 23/23 Ole Miss (Jan. 29), Johnson posted a game-high 22 points (8-8 FT), three assists against one turnover and two rebounds in 33 minutes. During Saturday's 89-58 victory at LSU (Feb. 1), he registered 18 points (7-13 FG, 2-4 threes, 2-2 FT), a career-high five assists against one turnover, four rebounds and two steals in 30 minutes.
On the season, Johnson leads the SEC in scoring (19.0 ppg) while converting 45.0-percent (134-298) from the field, including a 37.7-percent mark (49-130) from three-point range, and 62-of-70 (.886) free throws. He also leads the team in minutes (32.6 mpg) and ranks second in assists (46, 2.3 apg) and third in steals (19). Johnson has reached double figures in 19 of his 20 games played, topped the 20-point mark seven times and eclipsed the 30-point mark once this year.
Texas (15-7, 4-5 SEC) returns to action when it hosts Arkansas (13-8, 2-6 SEC) on Wednesday, Feb. 5. Tip is scheduled for 8 p.m. Central at Moody Center, and the contest will be televised nationally by ESPN2.
