Guard Tre Johnson also earns mention on All-SEC Second Team and All-Freshman Team.
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — University of Texas freshman guard Tre Johnson earned three mentions on the 2024-25 Southeastern Conference Men's Basketball Awards teams, the league office announced Monday afternoon. The official All-SEC awards are selected by the league's head coaches, and the coaches are not allowed to vote for their own players.
Johnson was named the SEC Freshman of the Year and earned spots on the five-person All-SEC Second Team and the five-person SEC All-Freshman Team.
Johnson is the first player in program history to earn SEC Freshman of the Year mention and the 10th individual in school history to claim conference Freshman of the Year accolades. Johnson joins a distinguished group of Texas players to earn league Freshman of the Year honors. Travis Mays (1987), Terrence Rencher (1992) and Kris Clack (1996) garnered Southwest Conference Freshman of the Year accolades, while T.J. Ford (2002), Daniel Gibson (2005), Kevin Durant (2007), Tristan Thompson (2011), Myles Turner (2015) and Jaxson Hayes (2019) claimed Big 12 Conference Freshman of the Year mention.
Johnson leads the SEC in scoring (20.2 ppg) while converting 39.5-percent (77-195) from three-point range and 88.3-percent (106-120) from the free throw line this season. He also leads the team in minutes (34.2 mpg) and ranks second in assists (81, 2.8 apg) and steals (28, 1.0 spg). His 20.2 ppg is the highest scoring average by a Texas player since Kevin Durant averaged 25.8 ppg in 2006-07. The last Texas player to average more than 20 ppg over a season was J'Covan Brown (20.1 ppg) in 2011-12.
Johnson is attempting to become just the sixth freshman to lead the SEC in scoring, dating back to the 1932-33 season. Alabama's Mark Sears ranks second (19.2 ppg) in the league entering the SEC Tournament. Johnson has reached double figures in scoring in 27 of his 29 games played, topped the 20-point mark 13 times and eclipsed the 30-point mark three times.
Johnson claimed five SEC Freshman of the Week honors during the 2024-25 season (Nov. 11, Jan. 27, Feb. 3, Feb. 17 and Mar. 3). He posted a career-high and Texas freshman single-game record 39 points, and he also tied the UT freshman single-game mark for most 3-pointers made (7-11) during the contest at Arkansas (Feb. 26). Johnson established the Texas program record for most points (29) in a freshman debut in the season opener against Ohio State in Las Vegas (Nov. 4).
Texas (17-14, 6-12 SEC) is the No. 13 seed in the upcoming SEC Men's Basketball Tournament in Nashville, Tenn. The Longhorns will open play in a First Round contest against No. 12 seed Vanderbilt on Wednesday, March 12 at approximately 2:30 p.m. Central (SEC Network).
