Men's Basketball outlasts No. 14/16 Texas A&M, 94-89 in double overtime, in SEC Tournament Second Round

Johnson leads six Longhorns in double-figure scoring with 20 points on Thursday afternoon.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Freshman guard Tre Johnson posted a team-high 20 points to pace Texas (19-14) to a 94-89 double overtime win against No. 14/16 Texas A&M (22-10) in a SEC Tournament Second Round contest in Bridgestone Arena on Thursday afternoon. With the victory, the Longhorns advance to face No. 8/6 Tennessee in the tourney quarterfinals on Friday afternoon (2:30 p.m. CT/ESPN).
Johnson, who was one of six Longhorns in double-figure scoring on the day, hit 8-of-21 field goals, including 4-of-9 from three-point range, and added four assists and three steals in a career-best 44 minutes. Graduate Tramon Mark recorded 15 points, a season-high five assists, four rebounds and two steals in a career-high 42 minutes, and graduate Kadin Shedrick tallied 14 points (career-high 10-10 FT) and five rebounds in 35 minutes. Junior Jordan Pope had seven of his 13 points in the two overtime periods and grabbed a career-high eight rebounds in 31 minutes, and senior Arthur Kaluma registered 12 points (5-9 FG), seven rebounds and two blocks in a season-high 40 minutes. Junior Chendall Weaver added 10 points (3-4 FG, 1-1 threes, 3-4 FT) and six rebounds in 23 minutes.
Texas A&M jumped out to a 10-6 lead following an Andersson Garcia three-pointer at the 15:01 mark, before the Longhorns used a 9-2 run over the next five minutes to grab a 15-12 advantage after a Shedrick layup with 9:59 remaining. A Manny Obaseki jumper gave the Aggies a 17-16 lead at the 7:22 mark, before Texas responded with an 8-0 spurt over the next three minutes to build a 24-17 cushion following a Kaluma layup with 4:25 left.
The Longhorns increased their advantage to 29-20 after a Kaluma three-point play at the 2:20 mark, before the Aggies used a Zhuric Phelps layup with 34 seconds left to trim the deficit to 33-27 at the break. Texas posted an 18-6 margin in points in the paint in the opening 20 minutes.
Texas A&M used a 13-3 run over the opening 3:21 of the second half to grab a 40-36 advantage following a Wade Taylor IV three-pointer at the 16:39 mark. After an Obaseki three-pointer gave the Aggies a 47-45 lead with 12:56 remaining, the Longhorns used a Weaver follow dunk and a Johnson three-pointer to take a 50-47 cushion at the 11:57 mark.
Texas A&M trimmed the margin to 55-53 following a Taylor IV three-point play with 9:56 left, before the Longhorns scored seven-straight points to build a 62-53 advantage after a Mark three-pointer at the 8:21 mark. A Weaver jumper gave Texas a 67-62 cushion with 3:42 remaining, but the Aggies scored four-straight points to cut the lead to 67-66 following a Taylor IV layup at the 2:53 mark. After a Weaver free throw pushed the Texas cushion to 70-68 with 1:15 left, Texas A&M took a 71-70 advantage following a C.J. Wilcher three-pointer at the 1:01 mark. A Kaluma three-point play gave the Longhorns a 73-71 lead with 36 seconds left, but the Aggies used a Henry Coleman layup with 30 seconds remaining to even the score at 73-73 and force overtime.
In the first overtime, Texas A&M built a 78-73 cushion following an Obaseki three-pointer at the 2:32 mark. Texas trimmed the margin to 78-77 after a Pope three-pointer with 1:04 left, before Pharrel Payne hit 1-of-2 free throw to give the Aggies a 79-77 lead with 19 seconds remaining. The Longhorns answered with a Shedrick dunk with four seconds left to force a second overtime.
A pair of Taylor IV free throws provided Texas A&M with an 85-84 cushion at the 2:29 mark. Texas responded with a Johnson three-pointer and a Pope jumper to build an 89-85 advantage with 1:06 left. The Aggies trimmed the deficit to 90-89 following a Jace Carter three-pointer with 24 seconds remaining. The Longhorns sealed the victory with a pair of Shedrick free throws and two Pope free throws over the final 22 seconds.
