Tre Johnson claims spot on first team, while Arthur Kaluma garners mention on the second team.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — University of Texas freshman guard Tre Johnson and senior forward Arthur Kaluma were both named to the 2024-25 National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Division I All-Gulf District Teams, the NABC announced Tuesday morning. Johnson claimed a spot on the 10-person first team, while Kaluma garnered mention on the 10-person second team.
The NABC introduced a new model for its Division I district alignment this season, with schools arranged by state rather than by conference. The NABC Gulf District encompasses all Division I member institutions in the states of Texas and Louisiana.
Johnson was previously named SEC Freshman of the Year and claimed spots on the All-SEC Second Team and five-person All-SEC Freshman Team by the league's coaches. In voting by media covering the league, he was named the SEC Newcomer of the Year and earned a spot on the five-person All-SEC First Team. One of five finalists for the Jerry West Shooting Guard of the Year Award, Johnson was a five-time selection as SEC Freshman of the Week this season (Nov. 11, Jan. 27, Feb. 3, Feb. 17 and Mar. 3).
Johnson leads the SEC in scoring (19.8 ppg) while converting 39.3-percent (84-214) from three-point range and 89.1-percent (114-128) from the free throw line this season. He also leads the team in minutes (34.6 mpg) and ranks second in assists (88, 2.8 apg) and steals (31). His 19.8 ppg is the highest scoring average by a Texas player since J'Covan Brown (20.1 ppg) led the Big 12 in scoring in 2011-12. Johnson is attempting to become just the sixth freshman to lead the SEC in scoring, dating back to the 1932-33 season. Auburn's Johni Broome ranks second (18.9 ppg) in the league entering the NCAA Tournament. Johnson has reached double figures in scoring in 30 of his 32 games played, topped the 20-point mark 14 times and eclipsed the 30-point mark three times.
Kaluma has played in 32 games (31 starts) this season and leads the team and ranks seventh in the SEC in rebounding (7.6 rpg) and tops the squad in double-doubles (eight). He also ranks second on the team in scoring (12.4 ppg), blocks (30) and minutes (29.4 mpg), third in steals (30) and tied for third in assists (59, 1.8 apg).
Kaluma has reached double figures in scoring in 25 games this season, including a pair of 20-point performances and one 30-point effort. He has hit double digits in rebounds 10 times and posted eight double-doubles this year. Kaluma has converted 46.5-percent (139-299) from the floor, including a 36.3-percent mark (33-91) from three-point range, and 78.4-percent (87-111) from the free throw line. He registered a career-high 34 points while hitting 12-of-16 field goals, including 5-of-6 threes, and 5-of-7 free throws and added eight boards, two assists and two blocks in 38 minutes in the home game against No. 2/2 Auburn (Jan. 7).
Texas (19-15, 6-12 SEC) is the No. 11 seed in the upcoming NCAA Tournament and will face No. 11 seed Xavier in a NCAA First Four contest on Wednesday, March 19 in Dayton, Ohio. Tip time is set for approximately 8:10 p.m. Central (9:10 p.m. Eastern) at the University of Dayton Arena, and the game will be televised nationally by truTV.
