The Longhorns swept a pair of SEC weekend matches with the win over the Razorbacks on Sunday.
Austin – No. 11 Texas Women's Tennis swept No. 70 Arkansas, 4-0, on Sunday at the Texas Tennis Center. The win completed a sweep of a pair of SEC weekend matches after the Longhorns defeated No. 12 Oklahoma on Friday.
Texas captured the doubles point with a pair of 6-1 wins at Nos. 2 and 3 and followed with singles wins by freshman No. 54 Ariana Anazagasty-Pursoo at No. 6, junior No. 107 Vivan Ovrootsky at No. 3, and freshman No. 25 Carmen Herea at No. 4.
After doubles, Anazagasty-Pursoo registered an efficient 6-3, 6-1 win over Grace O'Donnell to give the Longhorns a 2-0 overall lead. The players combined for four deuce points in the first five games with O'Donnell picking up two in the first two games for a hold and a break. Anazagasty-Pursoo broke back and held at deuce for 2-2, and after O'Donnell also held at deuce for a 3-2 lead, Anazagasty-Pursoo went on a 5-0 run for the set and a 1-0 lead in the second. O'Donnell managed one more game on a hold for 1-1, but Anazagasty-Pursoo against set out on a 5-0 run to the finish, winning the last two games at deuce for a break and a hold.
Ovrootsky was next off the court with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Anet Koskel. The first four games were all breaks with Ovrootsky earning her two at deuce until Koskel held for a 3-2 lead. Ovrootsky won her third deuce point for a hold to even it and then broke again for a 4-3 lead. That was the first of three straight breaks until Ovrootsky took a fourth deuce point to hold for the set. That would be the first of a stretch where five of six games reached deuce. Koskel grabbed the first one for a hold to start the second set, and after Ovrootsky held, she won consecutive deuce points for a 3-1 lead. Koskel then held on the last of them for 3-2, but Ovrootsky closed on a 3-0 run that was capped by one more deuce point for a hold.
The clinch then came from Herea with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Katarina Pavlechova. After Pavlechova held to start the match, Herea grabbed consecutive deuce points to start a 4-0 run. Pavlechova got one more game on serve before Herea took the last two for the win. The players both broke to begin the second set starting with Herea, but Pavlechova then held and broke again on a deuce point for a 3-1 lead. Herea turned the set around with a 3-0 run that included two breaks, and although Pavlechova broke back for 4-4, Herea responded with another break and served out the match.
That left three matches unfinished with freshman No. 104 Ashton Bowers trailing No. 93 Carolina Gomez Alonso, 3-6, 4-5, at No. 1. Gomez Alonso held in the opening game and then won three-straight deuce points for a 4-0 lead. In fourth-straight deuce-point game, Bowers got one of the breaks back, then held and broke again at deuce to get within 4-3. However, Gomez Alonso regained the break advantage and served out the set. Both players broke to start the second, but Bowers held for a 2-1 lead in the first of four-straight holds. Gomez Alonso broke again for a 4-3 lead and consolidated on a deuce point for 5-3. Bowers also held on a deuce point and was leading the next game, 15-40, to try to even the set when play stopped.
Freshman No. 124 Eszter Meri was close to a win in her match with a 6-3, 5-3 lead over Olga Bienzobas at No. 2. Despite three of the first four games reaching deuce, the set stayed on serve until Meri secured the only break on a deuce point for a 4-2 lead. She then consolidated for 5-2 on the way to the win. Meri captured the only break of the second set in its opening game and consolidated on a deuce point for a 2-0 lead, maintaining the break lead until play halted at 5-3.
Freshman Salma Drugdova then had a set lead in the last match, 6-4, 3-3, against Jimena Gomez Alonso at No. 6. Drugdova broke first for a 3-1 lead in the first set before the players exchanged 3-0 runs to Drugdova's win. After Drugdova held to begin the second set, Gomez Alonso won three-consecutive deuce points for a 3-1 lead, but Drugdova took the last two games to tie it when play stopped.
Earlier in doubles, Drugdova and freshman Charlotte Kempenaers-Pocz opened play with a 6-1 win over the No. 78 pair of Koskel and O'Donnell at No. 2. The Longhorns broke twice on deuce points in moving out to a 3-0 lead, and after the Razorbacks got one of the breaks back, Texas closed on another two-break 3-0 run.
The doubles point was then clinched at No. 3 by the same score from Herea and Meri over Pavlechova and Jimena Gomez Alonso. The scoring progression mirrored No. 1, except Texas served first, starting on a 3-0 run with two holds, the second of which came at deuce. Arkansas then held for 3-0, and the Longhorns finished on a 3-0 run with the last two being on deuce points.
In the remaining match at No. 1, the No. 63 pair of Bowers and Anazagasty-Pursoo trailed Carolina Gomez Alonso and Bienzobas, 5-2. Arkansas began on serve and won the first three games on deuce points. Texas responded with the next two, but the Razorbacks closed with the last two before play halted.
Texas (8-4, 2-1 SEC) will next travel to Gainesville to face Florida in the Longhorns' first-ever SEC road match on Friday, March 7, at 5 p.m. ET/4 p.m. CT.
