Texas enters the 2026-27 season as a consensus preseason top-10 team nationally. The Longhorns won three NCAA Tournament games last season, advancing to the Sweet 16 and finishing 21-15 overall. Head coach Sean Miller, entering his second season with the program, welcomes one of the nation's most heralded recruiting classes that includes 11 newcomers between freshmen and transfers. Leading the way for the incoming freshmen is Marcus Spears Jr., the No. 4 player in the Class of 2026, and McDonald's All-American Austin Goosby. High major transfers including David Punch (TCU), Isaiah Johnson (Colorado), Amari Evans (Tennessee), Elyjah Freeman (Auburn) and Mikey Lewis (Saint Mary's) were each significant contributors to their respective programs last year. Texas also returns starter Matas Vokietaitis, who averaged 15.1 points and 7.1 rebounds per game last season.
Baylor head coach Scott Drew is entering his 24th season in Waco, making him the fifth-longest tenured active head coach in the nation. The Bears advanced to the semifinals of the College Basketball Crown last season, and aim to build off that run with an influx of new talent coming into the program. Isaac Williams IV returns as the program's leading scorer at 10.4 points per game, but the Bears will also welcome seasoned transfers in Brett Decker (Liberty), Kayden Mingo (Penn State), Isaac Celiscar (Yale) and Evan Chatman (UAB). Baylor will also welcome a pair of top-40 prospects to the program, including five-star prospect Dylan Mingo – the younger brother of Kayden – and four-star standout Elijah Williams.
Texas holds a 165-98 advantage in the all-time series, with the last meeting coming 2024 in what was the Longhorns' final year in the Big 12. Prior to Texas' move to the SEC, the two programs had faced at least once each year since 1909 as each had been longtime members of the Southwest Conference (1915-1996) and the Big 12 (1996-2024).
Texas last played in San Antonio during the 2003 NCAA Regional at the Alamodome, where it defeated UConn and Michigan State to advance to the Final Four. Baylor last played in San Antonio during the 2014 NCAA Tournament, earning two wins to advance to the Sweet 16.
