Maurice Evans set for induction into the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame

Former Longhorn and NBA player to be honored in Wichita on Saturday.
WICHITA, Kansas — Former University of Texas basketball player Maurice Evans will be inducted into the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame on Saturday, July 25, at the Kansas Star Casino near Wichita. He is one of 10 individuals who will be inducted on Saturday as part of the overall Class of 2026.
The other nine individuals who will be inducted on Saturday include Greg Brummett (baseball), Steve Crosby (football), Judy Dyer (track), DeAngelo Evans (football), C.J. Hamilton (football coach), Mike Kennedy (broadcaster), Nathan Leeper (track and field), and Ricky Ross (basketball). Maurice Evans and fellow inductee DeAngelo Evans are cousins.
After playing his first two years at Wichita State University, Evans transferred to Texas in the summer of 1999 and had to sit out the 1999-2000 season under NCAA transfer rules. During his one and only season with the Longhorns in 2000-01, he earned third-team All-Big 12 Conference honors by the coaches and honorable mention All-Big 12 accolades by the media along with a spot on the five-person Big 12 All-Newcomer team.
A three-time Big 12 Rookie of the Week selection during the 2000-01 season, Evans started all 34 games and led the team in scoring (15.6 ppg), double-figure scoring games (32), steals (44) and 20-point games (eight) and also ranked third on the squad in rebounding (5.3 rpg) and blocks (21) and fourth in assists (56). He was the team's top three-point shooter while hitting 38.9-percent from three-point range, including a 43.8-percent mark during Big 12 play. Evans paced the Longhorns to an overall record of 25-9, including a 12-4 mark in Big 12 action (tied for second place), a run to the Big 12 Tournament championship game and a trip to the NCAA Tournament Round of 64.
Following his junior season at Texas, Evans elected to turn professional. He played nine years in the NBA for a total of seven different teams, including the Minnesota Timberwolves (2001-02), Sacramento Kings (2004-05), Detroit Pistons (2005-06), Los Angeles Lakers (2006-08), Orlando Magic (2007-08), Atlanta Hawks (2008-11) and Washington Wizards (2010-12). He also spent two years playing professional basketball in Greece (2002-03) and Italy (2003-04).
A native of Wichita, Kansas, Evans led Wichita Collegiate High School to the 1996 Kansas Class 3A state basketball title. He currently operates as a partner and NBPA-certified agent with ProMondo Sports.
