The University of Texas, the Athletics Department and the Texas Exes would like to say -- Texas Fans Make Us Proud.
You always have, you always will.
In 2006, the Texas Exes brought together a large group of constituents from across the campus -- students, band and spirit groups, athletics staff, police, alumni -- to brainstorm ways of leading our University community, our conference, and the nation to higher levels of fan sportsmanship.
One result is the message above -- Texas Fans Make Us Proud. It is, of course, depending on the pronunciation, a statement of fact or a request and it was meant as both. For years to come, you'll be seeing this message on banners, cups, shirts, napkins, jumbotrons, blimps, buses, and any other surface we can get it on, because we think it's a message worthy of maximum exposure.
Whether we're in Fort Worth, Dallas, Morgantown or Austin, good sportsmanship is something we have to actively think about. Here then, are some concrete suggestions for how you can help make The University of Texas the leader, not just of college sports, but of college sportsmanship, and make UT sporting events the model for safety, civility, and team pride:
• Watch your alcohol. If you drink alcohol, know your limit and stay well under it.
• Do unto others as you would have done unto you. Be a good ambassador for The University. When you spot visiting fans and teams, give them a warm welcome to Austin.
• Realize that the stands are full of children who are learning their values from you. Please watch your language!
• If you witness an unruly fan, inform an usher. Telling an usher is the best way to send the message that a fan's behavior is inappropriate.
• And remember, being a good fan isn't just about being friendly and respectful, it's also about passion. Come early, be loud, stay late, and wear burnt orange!
The success of this campaign will help create a safe and positive environment for recruits, student-athletes, coaches, media, alumni and fans. It is our hope that it will also create a nationwide emphasis on sportsmanship-related issues leading to more safe and positive environments on all college campuses.
