An All-American who helped Ohio State to two ITA National Indoor Championships and an NCAA finals appearance as a player, Martin Joyce was named Volunteer Assistant Men’s Tennis Coach at Texas on July 29, 2019. Joyce was also accepted to UT’s McCombs School of Business and is working toward a master’s degree in professional accounting.
Joyce comes to the 40 Acres after spending the last four years as a member of the Buckeyes’ men’s tennis team. He helped lead OSU to a top-four finish in the ITA rankings in each of those seasons, highlighted by a runner-up finish in the 2018 NCAA Championships when he was selected to the All-Tournament Team.
Joyce also was part of two ITA National Indoor Championship teams at Ohio State in 2016 and 2019, the first of which he clinched as a true freshman, and he was named to the All-Tournament Team both years.
In individual play, Joyce finished ranked in the Top 50 of the ITA doubles rankings in each of his four years. Peaked by a No. 11 ranking with partner Mikael Torpegaard in 2018, the duo reached the final of the NCAA Doubles Championships that year, leading to All-America honors. Joyce was also chosen second-team All-Big 10 that season.
As a senior in 2019, he finished in the top 25 with two separate partners, ranking No. 18 with JJ Wolf and No. 23 with Hunter Tubert. Meanwhile, he and Hugo Di Feo were No. 40 in 2017, and he paired with Ralf Steinbach to rank No. 50 as a freshman in 2016.
A three-time ITA Scholar-Athlete and Academic All-Big Ten selection (2017-19), Joyce earned a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration in finance with a minor in economics from Ohio State in May 2019. He was also a four-time Ohio State Scholar-Athlete and member of the Fisher College of Business Dean’s List.
Since being graduated from Ohio State, Joyce has served as a Junior Development Teaching Pro in his hometown of Hinsdale, Ill., where he has also spent the past five summers as a tennis pro. Additionally, he volunteered his time at Buddy Up Tennis in Columbus, Ohio, teaching tennis and fitness to individuals with Down Syndrome.
