FEATURE: inVESTed - Washington brings unique style to sidelines
George Washington enters his eighth season as an assistant coach with the University of Texas women’s basketball program in 2019-20.
Washington serves as the Longhorns’ recruiting coordinator, coaches the team’s wing players and assists with instructing post players on the court. He has been part of a Texas recruiting effort that has brought in four top-six national recruiting classes.
At Texas, Washington worked with a pair of post players – Imani McGee-Stafford and Nneka Enemkpali – who were drafted by WNBA teams. McGee-Stafford was the No. 10 pick overall in the 2016 WNBA Draft by the Chicago Sky, while Enemkpali was the 26th overall pick in the 2015 WNBA Draft by the Seattle Storm.
Washington also assisted in the development of Kelsey Lang, who was a 2016-17 All-Big 12 Honorable Mention selection, earned CoSIDA Academic All-District Honors and was a top-30 finalist for the prestigious Senior CLASS Award. Lang finished her UT career fifth all-time in games played [138], sixth in blocked shots [190] and 36th in scoring [1,086].
Prior to joining the Texas staff, Washington served as an assistant coach at Westbury Christian High School in Houston while also teaching computer science, health and physical education classes.
The Wildcats made four consecutive Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools [TAPPS] 4A State Championship appearances [2009-12]. Westbury Christian earned national rankings at No. 8 during the 2008-09 season and No. 9 in 2010-11. During his tenure, the Wildcats compiled a 140-16 [.897] overall record.
In addition to on-court coaching duties at Westbury, Washington also was responsible for coordinating the strength and conditioning program.
Before his tenure at Westbury Christian, Washington served as the girls varsity basketball coach at St. Thomas Episcopal in Houston. He oversaw 17 sports programs as the school's athletic director during the 2004-05 season while also leading the girls' basketball team to the TAPPS 4A State Semifinals and a 27-5 overall record.
Washington graduated from Abilene Christian in May 2000 with a B.S. in interdisciplinary studies with an emphasis in exercise and sports science. A member of the National Strength and Conditioning Association [NSCA], Washington is a NSCA Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist [CSCS] and formerly worked as a sports performance specialist at Memorial Hermann Sports Performance in Houston. From 2002-04, he designed and administered sports-specific training programs for NBA and NFL players.
Washington's coaching involvement has also included positions with the DFW Elite [2009-12], Houston Heat Girls Basketball [2003-12] and CyFair Texans Basketball [2006-09].
Washington and his wife Jackie reside in Round Rock with their four children -- daughter Lashann Higgs and sons George, Jackson and Jayden. His wife also was a standout basketball player at Abilene Christian.
