University of Texas head rowing coach Dave O’Neill announced Oct. 28 the hiring of Wendy Wilbur as a special assistant with the Longhorns’ rowing program. Wilbur will provide operations assistance to the Texas Rowing coaching staff.
"I'm thrilled that Wendy has joined our staff,” O’Neill said. “Wendy has the skills and personality that make her a perfect fit for our program. She is well respected in the rowing world and brings a wealth of experience. Wendy is a proven winner, and her role is vital to the success of our program. Wendy will take the lead on day-to-day operations and some long-term projects that are going to make a big difference in the years ahead."
An 11-year coaching veteran at the NCAA Division I level, Wilbur joins the Longhorns after serving as an assistant coach the last five seasons for Harvard University’s Radcliffe Crew. Wilbur helped Radcliffe win medals at the 2013 and 2014 Ivy League Championships and mentored novice rowers who earned positions in NCAA Championship squad boats from 2011-14.
“When I saw where the rowing program at The University of Texas was headed, I knew it was a staff on which I wanted to be a part,” Wilbur said. “With my years as an elite athlete and collegiate coach, I hope to add to the talented leadership already in place. The future looks bright, and I am honored to play a role in the development of the team.”
Wilbur was the head coach at the 2011 U.S. Rowing Junior “A” Development Sculling Camp after serving as the head coach at the U.S. Rowing Junior “B” Sculling Camp the previous four years.
An accomplished rower herself, Wilbur was a member of the U.S. National Rowing Team from 1997-2004. She helped the Americans to gold at the 2003 World Rowing Championships after winning bronze in 1999 and silver in 1998.
As a collegiate rower, Wilbur helped UMass to second place at the 1997 NCAA Championships, the inaugural national championship regatta. She holds dual bachelor’s degrees from UMass in communication and sociology in addition to a master’s in labor studies from UMass.
