Zach Glavash joined the coaching staff as a full-time assistant coach in 2016-17 after one year as a volunteer. Hee has nine years of experience and works with the men’s sprinters and relay teams at Texas.
In his first year on staff as a full-time assistant, Glavash helped the Longhorns sweep the men’s Big 12 Conference Championships as the sprinters played a big role in winning the team titles. Senior Senoj-Jay Givans won his third conference title indoors in the 60 meters. He would also go on to finish fourth at the NCAA Championships. The men’s 4x400 relay crossed first at the conference indoor meet to secure the overall team title, heading into the last event with a seven-point lead. Outdoors, Givans earned first team All-America honors in both the 100 and 200 meters.
During the 2017 indoor season, Glavash guided the Longhorns to 28 points at the Big 12 Championship with Givans’ title in the 60 meters leading the way. Texas also scored 12 points in the 200 meters to help the team win the championship. At the NCAA Championships, the men’s 4x400 relay also would finish in seventh place to help the Longhorns finish in ninth place overall.
At the Big 12 Outdoor Championship, Glavash’s group scored a total of 37 points in the individual races. That included a point grab in the 200 meters that saw five runners qualify for the final.
Working with the men’s relays Glavash guided the Longhorns to back-to-back wins in the 4x100 at the Big 12 Championship. The men’s 4x100 qualified for the NCAA Championsihps and would break the school record during the semifinals with a time of 38.68 seconds. In the final the team of all seniors clocked 38.73 to finish fifth, tying the best finish in school history.
Glavash went to London for the 2017 IAAF World Championships to coach Givans in the 100 meters. It marked the first world championship appearance for Givans and he finished 31st for his native Jamaica. Givans qualified for the world meet by finishing in third at the Jamaican National Championships.
During the 2015-16 season, Glavash helped the sprints, hurdles and relays group at Texas to multiple conference titles. The women won five of their seven events at the Big 12 Conference Outdoor Championship. The men also had a strong 2016 season with Senoj-Jay Givans becoming the first Longhorn to run a wind-legal sub-10 in the 100 meters. Byron Robinson also broke the conference record in the 600 yards at the Big 12 Indoor Championship before winning the Big 12 title outdoors in the 400 meter hurdles. Robinson then would go on to finish ninth at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio.
Prior to joining the coaching staff at Texas, Glavash was an assistant coach at Tennessee. He worked with the same event group for the Volunteers and recruited many of the team’s top athletes. Student-athletes recruited by Glavash scored 28 points at the NCAA Indoor Championships and 22 at the outdoor championship meet. Glavash recruited Christian Coleman to Tennessee, who would go on to break the collegiate record indoors in the 60 meters and 100 meters outdoors in 2017.
In 2013, Glavash was an assistant coach at Illinois where he worked with the middle distance, distance and cross country athletes. He also served as the recruiting coordinator for the Fighting Illini.
Glavash got his first full-time coaching gig at Eastern Michigan where he coached sprints, hurdles, relays and horizontal jumps from 2011-13. There he helped produce the Eagles’ first All-American since 2006. He also coached four Mid-American Conference champions in the 60 meter hurdles, 400 meters, 400 meter hurdles and long jump.
For the 2010-11 season Glavash was a volunteer assistant at Texas A&M assisting with the sprints, hurdles and relays. He helped the Aggies win NCAA team titles for the men and women. The Aggies also broke three school records in the relay events that year and the men won their first Big 12 Conference title indoors and first outdoors since 2001.
Glavash began his coaching career at his alma mater Texas Tech. He served as a graduate assistant from 2007-2010. He worked with the middle distance runners, sprinters and hurdlers. He also assisted with the horizontal jumps.
Glavash is a 2008 graduate of Texas Tech where he earned his degree in human development. He also earned his master’s in exercise and sport science from Texas Tech in 2010.
Glavash competed for the Red Raiders from 2006-07 where he was a two-time All-American. He is the 2007 Big 12 Outdoor champion in the 800 meters and rode that momentum into a ninth-place finish at the NCAA Championship to earn All-America status. In the 2006 indoor season, Glavash finished eighth in the 800 meters at the NCAA Championships to earn his first All-America certificate. He also still holds the Texas Tech indoor school record in the 800 meters at 1:46.80 and the 1,000 at 2:22.71.
Before transferring to Texas Tech, Glavash lettered two years at Illinois. He won the Big Ten indoor title in the 600 yards as a sophomore and then won the 800 meters outdoors. He also ran on the Big Ten champion 4x400 outdoors. Glavash also earned Academic All-Big Ten in 2005.
