Texas native Bennie Wylie joined the Longhorns staff in January 2011 as strength and conditioning head coach for football.
He immediately made his presence felt within the team and was honored with the Bridgepoint Education Holiday Bowl’s Admiral U.S. Grant Sharp Trophy, which is bestowed upon an individual that is dedicated to team success.
In May 2012, Wylie was honored as Master Strength and Conditioning Coach by the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches, the organizations’s highest honor.
Wylie came to Texas from Tennessee where he spent one season as football head strength coach after serving the previous seven seasons at Texas Tech.
During his time in Lubbock, Wylie established himself as one of the top strength coaches in the country. His last five seasons helped the Red Raiders produce a 46-18 overall record that was third-best in the Big 12, including an 11-2 season in 2008. The Red Raiders also posted a 5-2 record in bowls during his seven-year span.
Wylie guided the development of 14 NFL draft picks while at Texas Tech, including WR Michael Crabtree, who was selected 10th overall in the 2009 draft. That draft featured four Red Raiders selected in the first four rounds. Crabtree also won back-to-back Biletnikoff Awards as the nation’s top receiver in 2007 and 2008. In addition in 2008, QB Graham Harrell was named AT&T All-America Player of the Year, won the Unitas Golden Arm Award as the nation’s top senior QB, and finished fourth in the Heisman Trophy balloting.
Prior to his position at Texas Tech, Wylie was an assistant strength and conditioning coach with the Dallas Cowboys for four seasons, helping implement rehabilitation for injured players. In addition to working with the Cowboys, Wylie also spent the spring seasons heading the strength and conditioning program for the Dallas Desperados arena football team, a property of the Dallas Cowboys. The Cowboys had nine Pro Bowl selections during Wylie’s four seasons in Dallas.
Wylie is a member of the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association and the Titleist Performance Institute.
The Mexia, Texas native graduated from Sam Houston State University, where he was a four-year letterman in football from 1994-97. He was an All-Southland Conference running back as a senior in 1997 after averaging 4.8 yards per carry and leading the Bearkats in rushing. In 1994, he was named the Bearkats Freshman of the Year. He received a degree in kinesiology in 1999.
Wylie and his wife, the former Jennifer Small of Plano, Texas, have twin sons, Braden and Caden.
