Nicknamed "Squatty Body" by his teammates, David Kristynik played guard, center and defensive tackle at Texas from 1959-61. He was a bare-footed kickoff man for the Longhorns and the Texas field "cheerleader." The 5'8" player from Bay City was the original "holler guy" and always the pepper pot lifting his teammate's spirits with his constant chatter. "I started the play-by-play while on the bench because I was bored with not playing," Kristynik said. He suffered a knee operation during the 1958 season and played guard until mid-season of 1959, when he was moved to center. Kristynik earned first-team All-Southwest Conference honors by United Press International and The Dallas Morning News and honorable mention All-SWC by The Associated Press as a senior in 1961. He also was a reserve catcher for UT's Southwest Conference champion baseball team. Kristynik is a member of Silver Spurs, the honorary student service organization responsible for the care and transportation of Bevo, and also was a Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus. He is very involved in Boy Scouts and coached football, baseball and softball in Fort Worth. A former member of the Executive Committee of the Texas Exes, Kristynik is retired and lives in Lockhart. He has two younger brothers, Marvin and Paul, who also played football at Texas.
