WACO, Texas -- Texas picked up its sixth win of the season, improving to 6-2 (3-1 Big 12), with a 56-0 win at Baylor Saturday night in Waco. The Longhorns held the Bears scoreless for the second consecutive season and continued a string of 10 consecutive scoreless quarters against Baylor going back to halftime of the 2001 game.
"I'm real proud of our defense; our young linebackers and secondary stepped up," head coach Mack Brown said. "Our quarterbacks are making good yards with their feet. When we play tough defense like we did today, it makes it that much easier on the offense."
With Baylor moving the ball on its opening drive, Mike Williams stripped the ball from Baylor quarterback Aaron Karas at the UT 44-yard line and Derrick Johnson picked up the loose ball before tossing a lateral to teammate Nathan Vasher, who returned it to the Baylor 11. Four plays later, Brett Robin took the ball in from one yard out for his first touchdown of the season and a 7-0 Texas lead.
The Longhorns' next possession began at their own 25 following a Baylor punt. After moving 74 yards in 10 plays, highlighted by a 17-yard, third down completion from Vince Young to Sloan Thomas, Young went over the top from one yard out for a 14-0 lead.
Texas struck again early in the second quarter as Nathan Vasher returned a Baylor punt 53 yards to the BU 18. From there, Selvin Young had a 16-yard rush, which was followed by Vince Young's second rushing touchdown of the night, this time from two yards out, extending the lead to 21-0 with 10:11 to go in the half. Young finished the night with 101 yards and two touchdowns on the ground, while completing 7-of-13 passes for 65 yards.
"Our chemistry is getting better and better," Young said. "I think we are able to improve every game. I had great blocking all night and was able to pick up some good yards."
The Longhorns would get on the board twice more in the second quarter, moving 48 yards in nine plays on their next possession with Selvin Young taking the ball in from one-yard out. Chance Mock then led Texas 76 yards in six plays on its next drive, completing 5-of-6 passes, including a 41-yard touchdown pass to Roy Williams with 1:53 remaining before the half, giving Texas a 35-0 halftime lead. Williams caught three passes for a team-best 60 yards receiving for the game.
On the second possession of the third quarter, Vince Young pulled down the ball on the sixth play of the drive and ran for 64 yards to the Baylor one-yard line. It was the second-longest run by a quarterback in Texas history. Brett Robin finished the drive on the next play with his second rushing touchdown of the night, to go along with his 61 yards, for a 42-0 lead.
The ensuing drive by Baylor ended when Nathan Vasher pulled in the 15th interception of his career, which tied him for third on UT's all-time interceptions list.
It was Mock at quarterback again for the Longhorns' next scoring drive, taking the team 80 yards in seven plays and finding David Thomas, who broke a tackle up the middle in route to a 34-yard touchdown reception with 14:25 to go in the game.
Texas' final score came just over a minute later in the form of a 33-yard fumble return by Mike Williams who picked up the ball after Karas was hit and it slipped from his hand.
Texas finished the night with a balanced 248 yards rushing and 229 yards passing, while holding Baylor to 260 total yards. The Longhorns will return home to face Nebraska on Saturday, Nov. 1 at 11 a.m.
