Longhorns honored during annual awards banquet

AUSTIN, Texas -- The University of Texas football team had its annual awards banquet on Friday night at the Frank Erwin Center and the Longhorns honored this season's most outstanding individuals for their contributions on the football field, academically and within the Austin community.
Headlining this year's winners were two Longhorns' senior leaders -- WR Roy Williams and DT Marcus Tubbs. Williams was tabbed the George "Hook" McCullough Most Valuable Player, Darrell K Royal Most Valuable Offensive Player with junior RB Cedric Benson, and Outstanding Wide Receiver with fellow seniors B.J. Johnson and Sloan Thomas. Tubbs was also honored as Oustanding Defensive Lineman with sophomore DT Rodrique Wright, and was a recipient of the Dr. Nasser Al-Rashid Strength and Conditioning Award with senior OG Tillman Holloway and senior DS Cullen Loeffler.
Williams, Tubbs and Holloway also were named permanent team captains (as selected by their teammates) with senior CB Nathan Vasher. Vasher was tabbed Outstanding Defensive Back with senior S Dakarai Pearson. In addition, Holloway earned Outstanding Offensive Lineman honors, and Loeffler was named recipient of both the Longhorn Club Sportsmanship Award and Frank Denius Most Valuable Special Teams Player, along with sophomre P Richmond McGee and junior PK Dusty Mangum.
Junior LB Derrick Johnson was named both the Mike Campbell Most Valuable Defensive Player and Outstanding Linebacker, while senior Kalen Thornton earned Outstanding Defensive End honors and senior LB Reed Boyd was tabbed as Most Consistent Defensive Player. Most Improved for the defense went to sophomore LB Aaron Harris and junior S Phillip Geiggar, while the Outstanding Defensive Newcomers were CB Tarell Brown, S Michael Griffin, DB Aaron Ross and DE Tim Crowder.
On offense, Benson was tabbed Outstanding Offensive Back for the third year in a row, and junior Chance Mock and redshirt freshman Vince Young shared the Outstanding Quarterback award. Young was also named Outstanding Offensive Newcomer. The Most Consistent Offensive Players were a pair of running backs in senior Brett Robin and junior Will Matthews. Robin was also named the Lan Hewlett Academic Award winner and the Coca-Cola Community Service Award winner for his efforts away from the field. Most Improved for the offense went to four offensive linemen in junior Jason Glynn, sophomores Will Allen and Jonathan Scott, and redshirt freshman Justin Blalock. Seniors Bo Scaife and Brock Edwards shared Outstanding Tight End honors with sophomore David Thomas.
In other overall honors, senior RB Ivan Williams earned the D. Harold Byrd Leadership Award, and redshirt freshman RB Albert Hardy was tabbed American Airlines DX Bible Most Team Spirited. Harris, Edwards and Matthews were named as Joseph W. Moore Award recipients for tenacity, while Scaife and sophomore DE Mike Williams earned the Frank Medina Rehabilitation Award. Finally, senior CB Tien Van Nguyen, junior WR Tony Jeffery, sophomore PK David Pino, redshirt freshman LB Brian Robison, and redshirt freshman WR Eric Enard all earned Whatever It Takes (W.I.T.) Awards.
