AUSTIN, Texas - Hardee McCrary, a former University of Texas assistant football coach, has accepted a position in The Longhorn Foundation, the school's athletics department fund-raising and development area. McCrary will serve as Assistant Director of Development. In that role, he will assist the Foundation in all development duties as well as aiding in fundraising and game day management from a foundation perspective.
"This is an exciting opportunity for me and my family, especially because it allows me to remain a part of the Longhorn family," McCrary said. "The opportunity to work with the Longhorn Foundation is an exciting new challenge for me and also allows me to spend more time with my family while remaining active in athletics.
"I can't thank DeLoss (Dodds), Mack (Brown) and everyone in the UT family enough for helping make this opportunity possible."
McCrary spent the past six years as the Longhorns defensive ends coach and recruiting coordinator. He coached football at the high school or college level for 30 years. McCrary stepped down from his UT assistant coaching duties in January.
McCrary was part of a Longhorn staff that posted a school-best sixth straight nine (or more) win season with a 10-3 record and ranked 12th nationally in 2003. UT finished the year ranked 25th nationally in total defense (329.8 ypg), ninth in passing defense (177.3 ypg) and allowed 21.5 points per game (32nd NCAA).
McCrary joined the Longhorn staff for the 1998 season after spending five years at Rice, the final season as the Owls defensive coordinator. Prior to his stint at Rice, he spent one season coaching the secondary at New Mexico State and seven years at Tulane. He served as the Green Wave's assistant head coach and defensive coordinator from 1988-91. After one season as an assistant coach at J.J. Pearce High School in Richardson, McCrary coached the secondary at Angelo State from 1982-84. He began his career in the high school ranks, first as an assistant at Wylie (Texas) High School in 1974 and then Berkner High School in Richardson from 1975-77. His first college job was as tight ends and special teams coach at SMU from 1978-79.
A native of Richardson, Texas, he was the football MVP and team captain at Austin College in 1972. McCrary received his degree in political science in 1973.
