Texas holds off late rally in 64-60 win over Kansas State

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) -- Jamie Carey scored 21 points and No. 13 Texas withstood a late rally to beat 18th-ranked Kansas State 64-60 on Wednesday night.
Heather Schreiber added 14 points for the Longhorns (16-7, 9-3 Big 12), who are chasing league-leading Baylor with three games remaining in the regular season.
Kendra Wecker finished with 28 points to lead Kansas State (17-6, 8-4), including 13 straight points late in the second half. She added 12 rebounds for her 11th double-double of the season.
Trailing 59-53 with under 5 minutes remaining, Kansas State made one last charge. Wecker scored four quick points and Laurie Koehn drained a heavily contested 3-pointer to give the Wildcats a 60-59 lead with 2:11 to go.
But Nina Norman answered with a field goal and her two free throws in the final 1:09 gave the Longhorns a 63-60 lead.
After a missed free throw, the Wildcats got the ball back with 17 seconds to go. But Brie Madden couldn't handle Kimberly Dietz's pass in the post, and Kansas State never got off a game-tying attempt. Carey's free throw with less than five seconds remaining clinched it.
Norman finished with 10 points, four of them in the final 2 minutes.
Four early 3-pointers by Carey helped Texas jump out to a 19-12 lead, but Kansas State answered with a 10-2 run of its own.
Megan Mahoney kicked it off with a pair of free throws, and her nifty feed to Claire Coggins on the break kept it rolling. Back-to-back baskets by Wecker gave the Wildcats a 22-21 lead, their first since the game's opening minute.
After Texas edged back ahead on a 3-pointer by Heather Schreiber, Wecker knocked down an 18-foot jumper as time expired to knot the game at 26 at halftime.
Carey finished with six 3-pointers, the fourth time this season she's hit five or more in a game.
The Wildcats had won four out of the last five meetings, and tied the Longhorns for the regular-season title last season.

• Texas is now 16-7 on the year overall and 9-3 in the Big 12 ...The Longhorns are now 2-4 in Manhattan, and won their first game over the WIldcats as Big 12 opponents

On the game in general...
"Kansas State had a great zone tonight and they are so well-coached. What a game! At times, we didn't get the ball movement we needed, but that said, we came out with the win and it shows that our team is playing hard right now with much more confidence. The win here was a huge boost for our team. Against a well-disciplined team like Kansas State, defensive breakdowns hurt you, and we did have some. But, in crunch time, we made the plays. I could go on and on about (Kendra) Wecker and what a terrific player she is. We expected her to get her 20 and double-figure rebounds. We wanted to do the very best job we could against the rest of them."
Talking about the Texas players...
"Nina (Norman) wasn't her usual explosive self and she showed lots of courage playing tonight on her injured ankle. This is two games in row where two of our starting players stepped up with injuries. Tiffany (Jackson) did that on Sunday against Texas Tech. Right now, teammmates are helping each other and we are finding a way to win.
Jamie (Carey) really just started out hot. She was coming off her game against Tech which was so un-Jamie-like in terms of shooting. I don't think she missed today in the first half. Unfornatunely we went away from her when she had the hot hand early in the second half. Jamie did a really good job of keeping our team together to win this game.
About the Big 12 race...
"It continues to be a wild race, and it's long from over. I picked Kansas State to win the league because they didn't have to go through the South Division twice. At this point, Baylor is sitting at top and someone is going to have to catch them and reel them in."
