02.16.2005 | Softball
SAN MARCOS, Texas -- The third-ranked Texas softball team handed Texas State losses in both ends of a mid-week doubleheader, 4-0 and 2-0, on Wednesday night at Bobcat Field. Chez Sievers (Mission Viejo, Calif.) went 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBI and Cat Osterman (Houston, Texas) tossed her 10th career no-hitter and fifth-career perfect game in the opening 4-0 victory, before Jacqueline Williams (Arlington, Texas) went 2-for-2 in the night cap and drove in the game-winning run as Megan Denny (Crowley, Texas) tossed her second-straight one-hitter in as many career outings in the 2-0 win.
Osterman's (2-0) perfect game was her first since Feb. 8, 2003 (a 4-0 victory over Fresno State) and her first no-hitter since a 3-0 victory over UT-San Antonio on March 5, 2003. She recorded 17 strikeouts in the win over the Bobcats as Texas (5-0) belted out eight hits against Texas State's Katie Ann Trahan (3-6). Denny (2-0) followed with 15 strikeouts in her one-hitter in the second game as she notched her second complete game shutout in as many starts. Texas State fell to 3-7 with the losses.
"It felt good to get back out there tonight, especially after getting completely rained out last weekend in Arizona," Texas head coach Connie Clark said. "It was good to go out there and take some swings against a quality opponent and face some new pitching. I thought our pitchers did well, and I was glad to see our hitters make adjustments as the games went on."
Game 1 - No. 3 Texas 4, Texas State 0
Sievers plated the team's first run of the night in the third inning when she dropped a successful two-out bunt single that brought in Amber Hall (Deer Park, Texas) from third. Two innings later, Sievers stepped up to bat again with a runner on base - this time Desiree Williams (Tucson, Ariz.) - and smacked her first home run of the year, a blast to left field, giving Texas a 3-0 lead. In the top of the seventh, Williams and Wynter Turner (San Pedro, Calif.) opened the inning with back-to-back walks. Williams swiped third on a double steal with Turner, and came home to close out Texas' scoring when the Bobcats' catcher's throw sailed past the third baseman. Melanie Jarrett (Odessa, Texas) went a career-best 3-for-3 at the plate as she collected three singles, and Turner recorded a pair of stolen bases, a career-best. In the circle, Osterman cruised, striking out a season-high 17 batters in the 7.0 inning perfect game. She sat down nine-straight batters between the third and sixth innings and then struck out the final four batters in her second complete game of the year. Trahan took the loss for Texas State after scattering eight hits with seven strikeouts and four walks in the complete game.
Game 2 - No. 3 Texas 2, Texas State 0
The Longhorns' Williams' combined to put Texas up 1-0 in the fourth inning. After Desiree Williams singled through the left side to reach base, she took two bases on Turners' sacrifice bunt and landed at third. Jacqueline Williams' single up the middle plated Desiree and gave UT its first score and a 1-0 lead. Monica Askew (Houston, Texas) added an insurance run in the top of the seventh when she had a pinch-hit single up the middle to bring in Lacy Robinson (Highlands, Texas), who was pinch running for Jacqueline Williams, from second. Denny tossed 15 strikeouts in the win, allowing one hit - a double to Rachael Bonetti in the fifth inning - on her way to the win. She walked one batter in 7.0 innings. Olivia Henley (0-1) took the loss, allowing six hits with five strikeouts and one walk in 7.0 innings.
The Longhorns have a week off before returning to action when they host Oklahoma Christian in a 5 p.m. doubleheader at McCombs Field on Wednesday, Feb. 23. As part of the team's Wacky Wednesday promotion, fans who purchase two tickets will receive two tickets to the game free.
