AUSTIN, Texas -- One of the most respected track and field figures in the state of Texas during the past 40 years, former Texas A&M head coach Ted Nelson will serve as Honorary Referee for the 2005 Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays hosted by The University of Texas.
Nelson spent his entire career as part of the Aggies program, spanning nearly a half century. He arrived in College Station as a freshman in 1961 after a decorated prep career at Andrews High School in Andrews, Texas. As a student-athlete at A&M, he owned or shared 13 school records, including the 440-yard dash, before becoming a graduate assistant in 1966. Nelson stayed in College Station as an assistant coach until taking over the men's and women's programs in 1990.
During his 14 years as head coach he was named Big 12 Coach of the Year twice, and his Aggies earned 17 top-25 finishes at the NCAA Indoor and Outdoor Championships.
The 78th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays run Wednesday, April 6, through Saturday, April 9, at Mike A. Myers Stadium. The four-day event features nearly 5,000 of the nation's finest professional, collegiate and prep athletes.
