Wanezek and McGregory capture gold at World University Games

IZMIR, Turkey -- Former Longhorn All-American Sarah Wanezek and All-America sophomore Hayley McGregory captured gold medals in the 400m freestyle and medley relays, respectively, at the 2005 World University Games held earlier this week (Aug. 12-17) in Izmir, Turkey.
Wanezek (Brookfield, Wis.) earned a gold and bronze medal at the international meet. She swam the third leg of the gold medal-winning 4x100m freestyle relay which set a new World University Games record with a time of 3:43.97. The former three-time Big 12 Swimmer of the Year also claimed a bronze medal in the 50m freestyle, touching the wall in 25.60.
McGregory, of Austin and Bowie High School, led off the 4x100m medley relay and took home gold after clocking a 4:07.00 in the event finals.
Texas women's swimming co-head coach Jill Sterkel served as head coach of the USA women's team which collected 14 medals at the World University Games.
Overall, Team USA finished on top of the medal standings with 25 total medals (11 gold). Japan finished second with 20 medals, followed by Russia and Great Britain with 10 medals apiece.
