Justin Blalock and Rod Wright: Opposites attract
09.13.2005 | Football
When Justin Blalock and Rodrique Wright first met on their official visits to The University of Texas, neither had any idea how much of an impact they would have on the other's life.
Though they hailed from the same nationally top-rated recruiting class of 2002, Blalock, an offensive lineman, took a redshirt. Wright, on the other hand, played with the Longhorns' defensive line as a true freshman.
The duo became close friends during their second year when they lived across the hall in Jester Dormitory. They ate meals together, and began spending more time developing a deep bond. When the time came to leave the dorms, they decided to rent an apartment together.
While each of the 21-year-old roommates share a love for video games and bowling, don't expect them to share clothes.
"I think he might rip my shirts up," Wright joked of Blalock, who responded, "He's a little bit taller, but I'm a little bigger."
And just like many roommates, their living styles are dramatically opposite. Blalock is the self-admitted messy one, whereas Wright likes to keep the place spic-and-span.
"Rod makes his bed every single morning," explained Blalock. "My room will go uncleaned for two or three weeks, but it doesn't really bother him unless I leave a mess in the living room."
Wright may take care of the cleaning duties, but when it comes to mealtime, Blalock takes over the kitchen. After an "unfortunate experience" with spaghetti, he sticks to cooking his favorite meal -- pancakes. He prepares them for any and every meal, and Wright even admits they are not all that bad.
What makes for such a dynamic relationship is the way Blalock and Wright's friendship carries over to the football field. Because they play on opposite sides of the line in practice, each is able to advise the other about what it is like to be in his shoes.
"I tell Justin what defensive tackles don't like and he tells me what offensive tackles don't like," Wright said. "We can play off of that in game situations."
Blalock explains that having a close friend on the opposite side of the ball is like having a spy. Rather than creating conflict, they utilize it as opportunity for improvement. Since each of the linemen is considered one of the best in the nation at his respective position, it might be true after all.
Sophomore defensive tackle Frank Okam, who joins Blalock and Wright for a weekly Thursday night bowling outing and is almost a third roommate, says their unique personalities have a positive effect on the team.
"Both of them just have so much character," said Okam. "Rod is the fun and goofy one, and Justin's more laid back and relaxed. Everyone just loves being around them. And to see them carry themselves so humbly says a lot to this team."
Though Blalock and Wright may differ in stature, personality, and style, the bond shared between them is one that neither could imagine living without. Blalock sums up the friendship perfectly.
"We are completely different, but he is my brother."
