Venus wins collegiate debut and advances to quarters at Baylor Invitational

WACO, Texas -- UT freshman Michael Venus (Orlando, Fla.) scored a victory in his first collegiate tennis match to reach the quarterfinals of the Baylor Invitational Friday at the Baylor Tennis Center.
Venus opened his Longhorns career with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Texas A&M's John Nallon after receiving a first-round bye by way of his No. 2 seed. He advances to Saturday's quarterfinals, where he will meet Baylor's Matt Brown.
Longhorns junior Hubert Chodkiewicz (Corpus Christi, Texas) scored an opening-round win but suffered a straight-set defeat in the round of 16. After defeating Santa Clara's Kevin McQuaid by a 6-3, 6-3 count, Chodkiewicz fell to Texas-Arlington's Sandy Farquharson, 7-5, 6-2. He will take on Jonas Hoglund of Texas-San Antonio in Saturday's consolation round.
Chodkiewicz and Venus teamed up for an 8-6 doubles victory over Texas-San Antonio's Robin Fernandes and Andre Moreira. The Longhorns tandem will face TCU's Jordan Freitas and Radu Barbu on Saturday.
