Silver Spurs dedicate Bevo Center

AUSTIN, Texas -- The University of Texas Silver Spurs, an honorary service organization, are caretakers of UT's live mascot, Bevo, a Longhorn steer. On Friday, Nov. 3, the Silver Spurs formally dedicate the 2,000-square-foot Bevo Center featuring a vivid collection of traditions, tales, pictures, videos, memorabilia, and historical artifacts. The Silver Spurs Bevo Center is prominently located on the ground floor of the east side of Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium (Reese M. Rowling Hall). The Bevo Center is the lobby entrance to The University of Texas Club. The ceremony begins at 7 p.m.
Content and displays within the Bevo Center span 90 years of Bevo and Silver Spurs history, including:
- The true story of how Bevo got his name (not because of the traditional 13-0 branding legend);
- Football National Championship memorabilia; and,
- In-depth personality profiles and revealing tell-all tales of each of the 14 Longhorn steers who have reigned as Bevo.
The dedication culminates a year of fund raising for the Silver Spurs, whose alumni donated more than $2 million to fund a Silver Spurs Bevo Endowment. After covering construction costs, the Bevo Endowment will support The University's Neighborhood Longhorns program, an outreach and reading incentive program that provides mentoring and tutoring services to more than 3,000 youth in east and south Austin. The Neighborhood Longhorns represent the Silver Spurs' main charitable activity. Funds raised also will support the care and maintenance of Bevo.
The Bevo Center features award-winning design from Rachel Mast Design. The firm created a cutting-edge modern environment to feature Bevo and the history of the Silver Spurs. Former Silver Spur Bill Zapalac provided construction. Voluntary chairs of the Bevo Endowment and Bevo Center project are Sean Mast and Howard Nirken.
