With the first pitch of the 2007 collegiate baseball season less than two months away, Jim Baker, associate athletics director for event operations, notes that the renovations to the ballpark are "progressing well."
"In fact," Baker hastened to add, "we've already got the new lighting in place. All of the demolition is done and the canopy has been painted."
He also reported that work has begun on the bullpens that will be moved beyond the outfield fence as part of the renovation and that the new chair-back seats will be in place for this season. Capacity for 2007 will be about 4,800. "Now, this isn't to say that there won't be challenges this season," Baker admits. The 19 suites and the new press box will remain a work in progress.
When completed for the first pitch of 2008, UFCU Disch-Falk Field will have new clubhouses, new offices for the coaches, a workout room for the players, as well as a berm for the fans. "There will be a new player development area, with batting cages and pitching mounds," Baker said. "And when we're done, we'll have a capacity of 6,800. And all of the new seats will be comfortable."
The cost of renovating UFCU Disch-Falk Field is $25.8 million. However, as is the case with the Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium renovation, no tax or University dollars are being used in these projects.
