DALLAS -- Texas senior OT Justin Blalock has been named to the 2006 Outland Trophy watch list, the Football Writers Association of America has announced.
The Outland Trophy has been awarded to the best offensive or defensive lineman in college football since 1946. The winner is selected by the FWAA's All- America Committee, which selects the association's 25-man team and picks three Outland Trophy finalists.
Blalock has started all 38 games of his career at right tackle, during which time UT has averaged 268.9 yards rushing and 471.9 yards of offense per game. The Horns have also rushed for at least 300 yards 12 times during that stretch. Blalock was named third-team All-America by The Associated Press in 2005, when he was a key part of a line that helped Texas rank first in the nation in scoring offense (50.2 ppg), second in rushing offense (274.9 ypg) and third in total offense (512.1 ypg), while setting school single-season records in both points scored (652) and total yards (6,657).
The 2005 Outland Trophy announcement will be on Dec. 7 in Orlando, Fla., on the ESPN Home Depot College Football Awards Show. The Outland Trophy presentation banquet, sponsored by the Greater Omaha Sports Committee and First Data Corporation, is set for Jan. 11, 2007, in Omaha, Neb.
The Outland Trophy has been awarded annually by the FWAA since 1946. It is named after the late John Outland, a lineman at Pennsylvania at the turn of the century. Additional Outland Trophy candidates may be added during the course of the season. Tackles, guards and centers are eligible for consideration.
