As a Senior (1998-99)
Starting shooting guard ... one of the most versatile players in the Big 12 Conference ... was asked to play four different positions throughout the season for the Longhorns (point guard, shooting guard, small forward and power forward) ... team leader on and off the court ... played in 31 of the 32 games, making 30 starts ... averaged 5.8 points, 2.8 rebounds, 1.5 assists, 1.1 steals and 0.4 blocks per contest ... usually drew the assignment of guarding the opponent's top offensive player ... ranked sixth on the team in scoring ... posted four double-digit scoring efforts on the year ... had surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee on Nov. 10 ... missed the final exhibition game vs. the Australian All-Stars and the season opener at Houston (Nov. 17) ... returned to action ahead of schedule from the operation, when he logged 21 minutes off the bench in the home opener against South Florida (Nov. 21) ... made his first appearance in the starting lineup in the defeat at #11 Arizona (Nov. 25) ... had 10 points, three rebounds and two assists in the win at Oral Roberts (Dec. 2) ... registered nine points and five rebounds during the near upset of #23 Wisconsin (Dec. 15) ... posted 12 points, three boards, two assists and two steals in the win over Mississippi State (Dec. 28) during the Outrigger Hotels Rainbow Classic ... had five points and seven rebounds in the home win over Iowa State (Jan. 6) ... recorded a season-high 13 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the floor to go along with four rebounds in the victory at Nebraska (Jan. 10) ... posted four points, seven rebounds and four steals in the win at Texas Tech (Feb. 6) ... had his first double-digit scoring performance in nearly two months, when he recorded 10 points and four rebounds in the Big 12 tourney quarterfinal win over Colorado (Mar. 5).
As a Junior (1997-98)
Overcame a number of nagging injuries to play in 30 games with 26 starts ... averaged 7.5 points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.0 assists in 22.6 minutes per game ... showed improvement in nearly every statistical category from his first two seasons ... finished second on the team with 26 blocks while playing point guard ... was limited by a groin injury for the first two games of the season, then suffered a bruised left shoulder in UT's final exhibition game vs. the Southeast Melbourne Magic ... the shoulder injury kept him out of the North Texas game, ending a streak of 63 consecutive games played (every game of his UT career) ... despite the setbacks he improved his three-point shooting from 30.9 percent as a sophomore to 35.2 percent on the year ... also improved his free throw shooting from 45.1 percent as a freshman and sophomore to 67.9 percent as a junior ... had a total of seven double-digit scoring games entering the season ... matched that total in the first 18 games of 1997-98 ... ended up scoring 10 or more points 11 times ... had a streak of five double-digit games in a row snapped vs. Oklahoma State ... posted the second 20-point game of his career with a season-high 21 points on 8-of-11 shooting at Baylor ... also posted 16 points at Oklahoma and at Iowa State ... came close to notching just the second triple-double in school history with 14 points, eight rebounds and a career-high eight assists vs. Nebraska ... the assist total was his highest since his first game as a starter at DePaul as a freshman (five) ... his outstanding defensive effort vs. the Big 12's leading scorer, Cory Carr of Texas Tech, helped UT end a four-game losing streak with an 88-79 win in Austin ... Vazquez held Carr to 17 points (seven below his average) on 6-of-18 shooting ... turned around and limited Carr to 19 points in UT's win at Lubbock ... also helped limit Nebraska's Tyronn Lue to seven second-half points (3-of-8) after Lue posted 16 in the first half of UT's 105-91 win ... came off the bench, despite nursing a sore shoulder that limited him to nine minutes of action, to hold off Florida's Jason Williams (31 points) in Texas' final defensive stand in an 85-82 win.
As a Sophomore (1996-97)
One of six players to see action in all 30 games ... started 26 times, including the last 15 straight to end the year ... was hobbled by a groin pull for the first month of the season ... averaged 4.5 points and 2.0 rebounds in 20 minutes per game ... finished second on the team with 24 blocked shots while playing point guard ... among his victims were Baylor's 6-11 Brian Skinner and Iowa State's 6-11 Kelvin Cato ... totaled a career-high four rejections (all in the second half) in UT's 57-56 win over #7 Iowa State ... led the team with 14 charges taken ... had 14 points (12 in the first half), seven rebounds and two steals at #9 Utah ... the 14 points were his most since a career-high 24-point outing vs. SMU as a freshman (a span of 24 games) ... added 15 points in UT's Big 12 Tournament game vs. Missouri ... named team's Top Defensive Player at the spring basketball banquet ... earned a UT Athletics Director Award for having a GPA of 3.0 or above in the fall.
Australian Tour (July 1996)
Came off the bench to see action in five of six games ... missed the game vs. the Sydney Kings due to a cold ... averaged 6.2 points per game while playing at the small forward spot ... saw limited action at point guard as UT coach Tom Penders used the trip to give Titus Warmsley (since transferred to Montana State-Billings) an extensive look at the point ... scored six of his personal tour-high 11 points in the final 3:26 to help the Longhorns to a 101-97 win over the North Melbourne Giants ... connected on 4-of-8 from the field in that game ... hit 3-of-6 from the field, including 2-of-4 threes, in scoring 10 points in UT's 118-115 loss to the Geelong Supercats.
As a Freshman (1995-96)
Played in all 31 games with 25 starts ... averaged just under 20 minutes per game ... started the last 20 games in a row ... came to UT as a high school center and made a quick transition to the point guard spot ... made his first career start in the third game of the season at DePaul ... scored five points, handed out five assists and totaled five steals in 21 minutes vs. the Blue Demons ... his five steals tied the second-best single-game total by a UT freshman ... the assist and steal totals were both season highs ... developed into one of the Longhorns' top defensive players ... led the team with 18 charges taken ... also blocked 10 shots on the year ... came out of nowhere to hit 7-of-8 three pointers in scoring a career-high 24 points vs. SMU ... his 87.5 percent accuracy rate from the arc stands as the second-best single-game effort in UT history ... finished the season with five double-digit scoring games ... had a season-best eight rebounds vs. Oregon State ... joined fellow freshman Kris Clack on the The Associated Press SWC All-Newcomer team.
High School
Reagan High School in Austin, Texas (head coach Gail Simpson) ... listed as one of the top 30 quick forwards in the nation by recruiting analyst Van Coleman ... was a consensus first team Class 4A all-state pick...averaged 18.0 points, 9.0 rebounds and 5.0 assists per game as a senior in leading Reagan to a school-record 30 wins ... averaged 19.0 points and 9.8 rebounds per game as a junior ... was given the "Hops Award" by the Austin American-Statesman for his 150 dunks as a senior ... the Statesman also named Vazquez its "Most Unselfish Star" ... hit a free throw with three seconds left in overtime to give Reagan a 66-65 win over then undefeated Anderson and current teammate Kris Clack ... the game was played before the largest high school basketball crowd in Austin history (5,000) ... Anderson came back to defeat Reagan in the District 26-4A rematch and later knocked Reagan out of the state playoffs ... Vazquez played in Reebok All-American Classic All-Star Games at Lawrence, Kan. and Albuquerque, N.M. ... scored 21 points and grabbed nine rebounds in the Albuquerque game in helping the North to a 154-140 win ... played for the South in the Texas High School Coaches Associaton all-star game at Fort Worth.
