Selvin Young post-scrimmage quotes
08.19.2006 | Football
On the quarterbacks: When we come out against each other, it's an opportunity to look at mechanics. I thought they both threw the ball well and they both know how to play football. They are pretty good quarterbacks.
On what impressed him at today's scrimmage: The offensive line was really impressive. The first team defense was really impressive to me, as well. Greg Johnson, the punter, he has been working really hard. He was out all summer for 7-on-7. We would go and do 7-on-7, and [Aaron] Ross and I would go catch punts from him. He had the field. He had some good punts today, and he was impressive.
On his kickoff returns: I was looking to take one back. I went about 98 on my first one, I was looking to do the same thing later. I was a little disappointed we didn't get the ball, but all summer I've been praying that I will be able to go back to the kickoff game. I said the same thing at the start of the season before the (2003) New Mexico State game, and I got a chance to do that, and hopefully I will get to do that again.
On the first team offense scoring two touchdowns: We just wanted to come out and do what we have been doing. We've gone against our second-team defense, and we expect those guys to come out and do the best they can. Hopefully, when we play North Texas it won't be any different.
On what impressed him about Colt McCoy: He's having fun, when I look at a guy and I see him having fun and a smile, then I'm not worried about what else is going on. It's a game, and you feel comfortable. When you see people like that, and not just him, I have seen the same thing in Jevan [Snead] and Sherrod Harris and the other quarterback Matt McCoy, and it was fun.
On how good he thinks the defense is going to be: They are ridiculously fast. I think they have an opportunity to be better than they were last year. When we're in practice, we really go at it and those guys are on every play and the DBs are spectacular. It's going to be really tough for teams to come in here and score on us.
On the crowd reactions today: When we first walked out on the field, they showed what they had and it made us feel good. As the day went on, they showed a lot of love. I was impressed on how they embraced [Jordan] Shipley on his catch, making him feel good and getting him confident, because we're all rooting for him just as much as everybody else.
On having the first touchdown of the day: It's always good to get into the end zone. Not just for myself, but also for the offensive lineman because the whole time we're out there they want us to score and get them off the field. You're really trying to get the ball into the end zone to get those guys off the field so they can sit down and get some rest.
On if there is any disappointment about today's scrimmage: We will have to look at the film. I'm a critical person, I try to talk positive, but I am my worst critic. There were a couple of times where I felt like I made some cuts and I should have made them faster. I could have hit the hole a little quicker, and I could have high-stepped it and jumped over a tackle. There are some things on film that we're all going to be able to watch and get better from.
On the scoreboard: Oh that is amazing right there. Hopefully I won't get knocked out when I'm trying to run and look up at it. It's so big, and that will be my biggest problem - trying not to look at it while I'm running.
