SAN ANTONIO -- Texas head coach Mack Brown has been elected to the Board of Trustees of the American Football Coaches Association, the association has announced. Ashland University's Lee Owens and Wake Forest University's Jim Grobe join Brown and were elected by members attending the 2007 AFCA Convention in San Antonio.
They join a group of distinguished head coaches who guide the organization. The Board formulates policy and provides direction for the AFCA, which was founded in 1922 by Amos Alonzo Stagg, John Heisman and others. The AFCA has more than 10,000 members from all levels of the profession.
Brown completed his ninth season at Texas and has led UT to become the only school in the nation to win 10 games in each of the last six years. He has also led the Longhorns to at least nine wins and a bowl game in each of his nine years, and counting his 10 years of service at North Carolina, Brown's squads have registered 11 consecutive nine (or more) victory seasons, 17 winning seasons in a row and 15 consecutive bowl berths. His 160 victories since 1990 and 113 wins in the last 11 years both rank second nationally. Brown has been the head coach at Appalachian State (1983), Tulane (1985-87), North Carolina (1988-97) and Texas (1988-present). His overall record stands at 179-96-1, which includes an impressive 93-22 record in his nine years with the Longhorns. In 2005, he earned AFCA Regional Coach of the Year honors after leading Texas to a 13-0 record, the Big 12 championship and the school's first national title since 1970. He was also named the Bryant National Coach of the Year. This season, he guided the Longhorns to a 10-3 record, including a 26-24 win over Iowa in the Alamo Bowl. The win marked the first time Texas has won three bowls in three consecutive seasons and was also the Horns fifth bowl win in the last six years.
Returning members of the AFCA Board of Trustees include incoming president Ken Sparks of Carson-Newman College; first vice-president Tyrone Willingham of the University of Washington; second vice-president Dick Tomey of San Jose State University, and formerly an assistant coach at Texas, and third vice-president Larry Kehres of Mount Union College.
Also serving on the Board in 2007: Rob Ash, Drake University; Mike Bellotti, University of Oregon; Tim Murphy, Harvard University; Joe Glenn, University of Wyoming; Joe Novak, Northern Illinois University; Tommy Tuberville, Auburn University; Rich Rodriguez, West Virginia University; Mike Welch, Ithaca College; Jim Tressel, Ohio State University and Rob Ianello, University of Notre Dame, ex officio member and chairman of the Assistant Coaches Committee. AFCA Executive Director Grant Teaff serves as secretary-treasurer of the organization.
The AFCA was founded in 1922 and currently has more than 10,000 members around the world, ranging from the high school level to the professional ranks. According to its constitution, the AFCA was formed, in part, to "maintain the highest possible standards in football and the coaching profession" and to "provide a forum for the discussion and study of all matters pertaining to football and coaching."
