01.03.2007 | Football
Former UT and current Tennessee Titans quarterback Vince Young has been named the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year by The Associated Press.
Young, who led Texas to the 2005 National Championship and was the third overall pick in last April's draft, received 23 votes from a nationwide panel of 50 sportswriters and broadcasters. The rest of the voting included New Orleans Saints WR Marques Colston, and Jacksonville Jaguars RB Maurice Jones-Drew with nine votes each, San Diego Chargers OT Marcus McNeill with six votes and Saints RB Reggie Bush with three.
Young took over as the starting quarterback in week four of the season and led the Titans to overcome an 0-5 start and finish 8-8 and in contention for a playoff berth until the last game of the regular season. The stretch included a six game winning streak, which had Tennessee within one game of becoming the first team in NFL history to lose its first five games and make the playoffs.
He became the first rookie quarterback to rush for more than 500 yards and finished 184-of-357 passing for 2,199 yards and 12 TDs.
Young becomes the second Longhorn to win the award since it began in 1967, following Earl Campbell in 1978, who won it with the Houston Oilers, which went on to become Tennessee Titans.
