10.14.2007 | Men's Tennis
MIDLAND, Texas -- Texas freshman Kellen Damico scored a straight-set victory over Texas Tech's Ilya Babinciuc to collect his second tournament title of the fall, as he claimed the singles main draw title Sunday at the Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational.
Damico (Parker, Colo.) opened by taking the first set off of Babinciuc, 7-5, before dominating play in the second set, winning by a 6-1 count. A 2006 Wimbledon boys' doubles champion, Damico improved to 11-0 in his initial season of college tennis. Damico won his first college tournament last month at the H-E-B Baylor Invitational in Waco by winning six matches in three days.
Senior Hubert Chodkiewicz turned an opening-round defeat into a positive, as he won the singles consolation bracket with a 7-6, 3-6, 1-0 (12-10) victory over Texas Tech's Christian Rojmar.
Texas returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 20 when it hosts the four-day ITA South Central Regional Championship at the Penick-Allison Tennis Center.
