The Longhorns earned their third-straight sweep and fifth-straight victory with their win in Oxford.
Oxford, Miss. – No. 2 Texas Men's Tennis swept No. 24 Ole Miss, 4-0, on Thursday at the Palmer/Salloum Tennis Center in Oxford. It was the Longhorns' third-straight sweep and fifth-straight victory overall.
Texas claimed the doubles point with wins at Nos. 3 and 2 and followed with singles victories by sophomore Oliver Ojakaar at No. 3, sophomore No. 36 Sebastian Erkisson at No. 2, and freshman Lucas Marionneau at No. 6 for the clinch. Freshman No. 97 Abel Forger was also potentially one game away from a win at No. 4 when play stopped.
During doubles, the No. 38 duo of Eriksson and Ojakaar was first off the court with a 6-3 win over Benjamin Martin and Matthieu Chambonniere at No. 3. A short time later, the No. 26 pair of Marionneau and senior Sebastian Gorzny matched that score in clinching over Stefano D'Agostino and Pietro Pampanin at No. 2. That left the match at No. 1 unfinished where Forger and freshman Kalin Ivanovski trailed No. 24 Kai Milburn and Isac Stromberg, 4-5, when play halted.
Ojakaar then started singles with an efficient 6-1, 6-3 victory over Pampanin at No. 3 for a 2-0 overall lead, that was extended by No. 36 Eriksson with a decisive, 6-4, 6-0 ranked win over No. 110 Chambonniere at No. 2. Marionneau then provided the clinch by rallying in his second set for a tiebreaker win to complete his 6-3, 7-6 (4) victory over Martin at No. 6.
That left three matches unfinished, with No. 31 Ivanovski even in his match against No. 77 D'Agostino after splitting a pair of tiebreakers, 7-6 (3), 6-7 (5), at No. 1. At No. 4, No. 97 Forger had rallied from a set down in his contest against Vlado Jankanj and was potentially a game away from completing a three-set comeback, but play was stopped with Forger leading, 4-6, 6-3, 5-4. Senior Jonah Braswell was then a set down, but up, 6-5, in his second set against Noah Schlagenhauf at No. 5.
The Longhorns (19-6, 10-2 SEC) continue on the road to face No. 18 Auburn on Saturday, April 4, at 12 p.m. CT.
