Five from Men's Tennis advance at Texas Invitational

AUSTIN, Texas -- Texas sophomores Dimitar Kutrovsky and Josh Zavala and freshman Ed Corrie each tallied two victories apiece to advance to the main draw singles semifinals Saturday in the Texas Invitational at UT's Penick-Allison Tennis Center.
Kutrovsky opened the day with a 6-2, 6-0 defeat of Marquette's Stephen Shao before putting away Arizona State's Matt Brooklyn in the quarterfinals. Kutrovsky (Sofia, Bulgaria) will take on his classmate, Zavala, in Sunday's semifinals.
Zavala (Amarillo, Texas) opened the day with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Florida Atlantic's Marc Abdelnour before defeating Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's Dmitry Novikov in the quarterfinals, 6-1, 6-3.
Corrie (Harpendon, England) locked up his spot in Sunday's semifinals with a 6-3, 6-3 win over teammate Hubert Chodkiewicz (Corpus Christi, Texas) in the round of 16 before eliminating Texas A&M's Matt Bain in the quarterfinals, 6-1, 3-6, 6-2. Corrie will meet Florida Atlantic's Olivier Sajous in the semifinals.
Junior Jonah Kane-West and sophomore Rook Schellenberg will battle for the "B" singles draw championship on Sunday after each scored a pair of victories on Saturday. Kane-West (Free Union, Va.) defeated Oregon's Mike Myrhed by a 6-2, 7-6 count before eliminating Laredo Community College's Maxime Moreau from the semifinals, 7-6, 7-6.
Schellenberg (Dallas, Texas) advanced by defeating Laredo's Diego Troiano, 6-3, 6-2, and Laredo's Georgie Perez, 6-4, 6-3. The Texas doubles duos of Kutrovsky and Zavala and Chodkiewicz and Corrie also picked up a pair of wins to advance to Sunday's doubles semifinals.
At the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championship in Columbus, Ohio, freshman Kellen Damico and Luis Diaz Barriga suffered a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 loss in the doubles semifinals to USC's Robert Farah and Kaes Van't Hof.
