No. 25 Women's Tennis downs TCU, 5-2

AUSTIN, Texas -- No. 25 Texas (2-1) took the doubles point and picked up singles wins from Vanja Corovic, Courtney Zauft, Caroline Larsson and Sarah Lancaster, as the Longhorns tallied a 5-2 win over No. 35 TCU (0-1) Saturday afternoon at UT's Penick-Allison Tennis Center.
"I am very pleased with the outcome today against TCU," UT coach Patty Fendick-McCain said. "We started off strong by winning the doubles point. We got a standout performance from Caroline Larsson and another from Sarah Lancaster. Courtney Zauft found her form today and put in a solid performance. Vanja Corovic came back from a set and 4-1 down to win in 3 sets. TCU is going to beat some very good teams this year and that was a great test for us. We had a great crowd and it was great tennis. What could be better?"
UT claimed the doubles point on the strength of victories at the second and third doubles slots. Sophomore Stephanie Davison (Port Orchard, Wash.) and Larsson (Sodertalje, Sweden) made short work of Maria Babanova and Kewa Nichols, winning by an 8-1 count at the third slot.
Texas nailed down the doubles point when freshman Maggie Mello (Laguna Hills, Calif.) and Zauft edged Nina Munch-Soegaard and Katariina Tuohimaa at second doubles, 8-6.
The Longhorns pushed their lead to 2-0 when Lancaster topped Idunn Hertzberg, 6-0, 6-4 at the sixth slot, and UT took a 3-0 lead when Larsson finished off Tuohimaa at the fifth position, 6-2, 6-3. Texas clinched the match when Zauft defeated Anna Sydorska by a 7-6 (4), 6-2 count at third singles.
Texas collected its final point when sophomore Vanja Corovic (Belgrade, Serbia) rallied for a 3-6, 7-5, 6-2 win over TCU's Munch-Soegaard at first singles.
The Longhorns resume competition on Sunday, Feb. 17 when they take on Rice at noon in Austin.
