AUSTIN, Texas -- No. 21 Texas (16-5, 10-1 Big 12) dropped the doubles point but regrouped to win all six singles matches, as the Longhorns defeated Texas Tech (11-11, 5-6)by a 6-1 count Sunday afternoon in the regular-season finale at UT's Penick-Allison Tennis Center.
Texas picked up an 8-4 doubles win from senior Courtney Zauft (San Antonio, Texas) and freshman Abby Liu (Houston, Texas) over Kelsy Garland and Simone Templeton at the third position, but Texas Tech took the matches at courts two and one to nail down the doubles point.
Texas evened the tally at one when freshman Maggie Mello (Laguna Hills, Calif.) dealt Leah Roberts a 6-2, 6-0 defeat at the sixth position. Sophomore Stephanie Davison (Port Orchard, Wash.) put the Horns in the lead for good with a 6-1, 6-2 win at third singles over the Red Raiders' Garland, and Zauft, competing in her final home match at Penick-Allison, finished off Tech's Janet Durham at second singles, 6-1, 6-4.
Sophomore Sarah Lancaster (San Antonio, Texas) clinched the team victory for Texas with a dominant 6-2, 6-1 showing over Kerryn Potgieter, and freshman Caroline Larsson (Sodertalje, Sweden) pushed the lead to 5-1 with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Tech's Templeton at fourth singles. Sophomore Vanja Corovic (Belgrade, Serbia) finished off the Longhorns' victory with a 6-7 (1), 6-2, 1-0 (10-4) win over Samantha van der Drift at first singles.
"This was a strong finish to our regular season," UT coach Patty Fendick-McCain said. "We got the effort we needed after the doubles matches and finished the match well. The Big 12 tournament is always demanding, but we look forward to getting started on Friday."
Texas has earned the second seed and a first-round bye at this week's Big 12 Championship in College Station. The Longhorns will open tournament play on Friday, April 25 at 3 p.m. Central against the winner of Thursday's opening-round match between the seventh and tenth seeds.
