Women's Tennis opens NCAA Championship with 4-0 win over South Florida

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- No. 19 Texas (19-6) took the doubles point and picked up singles wins from sophomore Stephanie Davison, senior Courtney Zauft and Sarah Lancaster in a 4-0 victory over No. 43 South Florida (18-7) Friday in the opening round of the NCAA Tennis Championship.
The Longhorns advance to Saturday's NCAA round-of-32 match where they will take on host Florida State, a 4-0 winner over Samford on Friday. First serve is set for 3 p.m. Central at FSU's Speicher Tennis Center.
"We looked really good everywhere today," UT coach Patty Fendick-McCain said. "We won three matches in straight sets, and Vanja (Corovic) was plugging away in her match at first singles. We played well throughout, and we got off to a good start in doubles, so I was pleased all the way around today."
Texas took two of three doubles matches to capture the doubles point. The Horns dropped the match at the second slot before rallying for victories at the first and third positions. Corovic and junior Marija Milic outlasted USF's Janette Bejikova and Iciri Rai at the first slot, 8-6, and freshman Maggie Mello and Zauft put away the Bulls' Allyn Mueller and Nata Guevara at the third position, 8-5, to clinch the doubles point.
Davison made short work of Mueller at third singles, winning 6-1, 6-2 to push the Texas lead to 2-0. Zauft took the first set off of Jessica Zok at second singles, 6-1, before holding off Zok in the second set, 6-4 to extend Texas' lead to 3-0.
The Horns collected the clinching point from Lancaster, who finished off Lauren Shumate at sixth singles, 6-3, 6-4.
