LEXINGTON, Ky. - The University of Texas soccer team (2-0-0) scored three times in just two minutes in the second half to defeat the Kentucky Wildcats, 3-1, in Lexington. Senior Kasey Moore netted two while freshman Amanda Lisberger scored one for the second-straight game.
The match got off to a slow start with the ball staying in the middle third of the field for the majority of the first half. Texas fired three shots on goal but wasn't able to capitalize, leaving the game tied at zero heading into the second period.
Kentucky managed to get on the board first in the 52nd minute. UK's Laura Novikoff split the defense at the top of the box and after keeper Dianna Pfenninger came out to challenge, fired the ball to the back right corner of the net.
The Longhorns only stayed behind just under five minutes though, as they scored three goals in a matter of two minutes. The offensive attack started off a Courtney Gaines free kick. Gaines sent the ball to a crowded left post and after bouncing off various UT and UK players, rebounded to a wide open Kasey Moore who netted the equalizer.
Moore stayed in the offensive mindset, scoring again just a minute later for the second multi-goal game of her career. The senior defender dribbled the ball up the left side undefended and fired the shot from the top of the box give UT the 2-1 advantage.
Texas continued its scoring barrage when freshman Amanda Lisberger connected on cross from Jill Gilbeau and Niki Arlitt less than a minute later. Lisberger split the defense and sent the ball past UK keeper Sydney Hiance for the second goal of her UT career. Texas outshot the Wildcats 15-5 and fired three corners to UK's two.
The Horns wrap up their first road trip with a Noon Central match on Sunday at Louisville.
POSTGAME QUOTES
Head Coach Chris Petrucelli
On the Longhorns' play in the first half: We were sloppy and gave the ball away a lot. I didn't feel like we were that sharp in the first half.
On Kentucky scoring first: We woke up after Kentucky scored. Our reaction to their goal was outstanding. It's easy to get down after you give up a goal and I thought our reaction was `alright well we need to get out and score'. We were so much sharper after they scored and it took their goal to wake us up.
On Kasey Moore's two goals: The balls that she hits are hit with such pace that they are hard to save. If she gets a chance to shoot, there is a pretty good chance it's going in because it is hit with such force.
On Amanda Lisberger's play off the bench: "I thought Amanda did a really good job. She again gave us a great spark coming off the bench. She was all over the field and did a great job."
